Chapter 44

It’s been a couple of hours since we started this floor, and soon we should be at the boss. Half an hour ago, we started hearing the roars and screams of something in pain, and they have only grown louder as we’ve progressed through the dungeon.

Unlike the last dungeon, this floor has been a maze of offshoots, and dead ends. Each room has had an abundance of imps, all trying to kill Nix once she enters. Thankfully, the imps seem to be assigned to their room, and won’t give chase until we enter.

I don’t quite understand dungeon mechanics. Why wouldn’t they all converge on us once they know we are here. That’s what would happen in the wild. If I was under attack in the forest, my pack wouldn’t wait for me to call for them. They would insist on getting involved to overwhelm my foe. Why is this different?

Looking around, I let the thoughts slip from my focus. Joy is busy shooting several Ice Lances at her foes. She’s progressed quickly during this dungeon, even if I’ve had to use my own energy to refill hers. Her mana isn’t very high at the moment, and without me acting as the battery, she wouldn’t be much help with these long fights.

Niatta is doing well. After every fight, she heals Nix or one of the others if they take damage. Yessa is proving to be a prime example of the companions that are waiting for the elf. Now she just needs a damage dealer to really help the party.

Nix on the other hand is starting to sag. Her energy levels are getting low as she takes hit after hit from the imps. I can only imagine how tiring it is to keep her shield in place every fight. Could I help her? Yeah, but she won’t grow if she doesn’t do this herself.

Quincy is also starting to look tired. The dashing and swiping of her giant sword would wear anyone out.

Yawning, I walk up to Niatta. “Let’s take a small break before pushing on.”

“Break time!” Niatta shouts as we clear the room of loot.

“Thank god,” Nix whimpers. Moving to my side, she falls onto the ground, and looks at me expectantly.

“Can I help you?” I ask.

Nodding, she pokes my side. “You have the donuts.”

Chuckling, I summon the box and let it fall down between me and the cat. Her excitement gets the better of her, and she quickly grabs a treat with both hands.

“Thanks, Fen!” Pausing long enough to squeal, she starts taking bite after bite.

“Slow down.” Turning from Nix, I look over Niatta. “Have you thought about what sort of companion you would like to have?”

Nodding, she grabs a donut as well. “I need someone that can do damage as I’m sure you are aware. I’m not going to be too picky on the animal.”

“Something powerful hopefully. You and Joy attack quick enough, and you have your dual short swords if needed.”

Nix pauses and chews her last bite before asking, “Why haven’t you used your swords.
