Chapter 19

Victoria returned the key bowl to its rightful place under the last pendant light. She scanned the main floor again, searching for anything else she could do to erase all reminders of the sheriff’s search. Since the sheriff left with her brother, she’d already straightened the drawers and returned everything downstairs to their original places—the same places they had occupied since her mother first put them there.

A sharp growl from her stomach reminded her she hadn’t eaten since lunch. She hoped her father had grabbed something healthy for himself at the sheriff’s office.

She opened the fridge. The dogs ran over, slamming into each other to get to her first.

“You had your dinner hours ago, darlings.”

She took out an apple and a chunk of cheddar cheese to eat with crackers.

As she nibbled half-heartedly on her food, all she wanted to do was go to sleep and wake up to a better day. She still hadn’t heard from her father about what was going on with Alex.

Samuelson, the criminal attorney Fenton recommended, had arrived a few hours ago. He supposedly had clout in the area thanks to growing up in the nearest city, but he didn’t live there anymore and it had taken him over three hours to drive the distance. Anything he accomplished would have to occur after normal business hours, so Victoria worried he might not have accomplished anything at all.

Going crazy waiting, she called her father.

He answered on the second ring. “Hi, honey.” He sounded tired.

She put her phone on speaker and set it on the kitchen island. “Are you coming home soon?”

“Yes, I should be back soon. Samuelson will drop me off.”

“What about Alex?”

Her father sighed. “He’ll get out tomorrow. He has to stay one night. There’s a report to complete in the morning when the courthouse opens. Fortunately for him, for all of us, there’s not enough evidence to proceed.”

“I know there isn’t.” She was still fuming about the search. “That’s good news. I’ll see you soon. I love you.”

“I love you, too. Keep the doors locked and the alarm on.”

“I will.”

She trudged upstairs and into Alex’s bedroom with her dogs following. Izzy jumped onto Alex’s bed and settled down with her head on her paws.

Victoria closed the drawer of the bedside table, thinking about the diamond ring the authorities had found there.

Poor Alex. All his joking with me when we first arrived, he must have been so hurt and didn’t want to show it. I wish I had known.

She picked a shirt off his floor and hung it in the closet. Her brother’s space had been messy to begin with, so it was hard to tell exactly what part of the disarray the authorities caused. About to make his bed and pick up the rest of his clothes, she changed her mind, letting them stay as they were. Alex could put his room back together when he got back, if that’s what he wanted to do. If she went around organizing things he didn’t want organized, he might feel more violated than he already did.
