We only suffered a few more minutes of awkward silence before Buck pulled up to the ranch gate and waited for it to open. “Welcome to the Roaring Fork.”

“It’s beautiful,” she said with evident awe.

“Sure is,” I added.

Buck drove to the front of the old farmhouse just inside the gate. They’d done a lot more work to it since the last time I saw it. “I know I said I’d invite you over once you were settled, but Stella really wants to see Rip and meet you, Pearl. Mind if we stop in and say hello?”

“I was hoping we would,” I told him, climbing out and opening Pearl’s door for her. “Stella, Buck’s wife, is great. You’re going to love her.”

“I don’t doubt it. Every person you introduce me to is nicer than the one before. I don’t mean that literally,” she stammered. “Just that everyone is so nice.”

I put my arm around her shoulders. “I knew what you meant, darlin’.”

I caught Buck’s raised eyebrows. First Hammer, now him. I suppose it was to be expected.
