Dorr’s Rebellion (1841-2, Rhode Island): A fight over Rhode Island’s government waged between those who wanted a new democratic constitution, and those who wanted to operate under their old British royal charter even after the American Revolution, a charter which disenfranchised those who didn’t (and practically couldn’t) own land. Conflicting governors were elected in 1842, Thomas Dorr on the constitutional side, and Samuel Ward King on the charter side. Dorr decided to arm his supporters, and raided the city’s arsenal to do it, an insurrection that failed when the cannons were found to be non-operational. There were no battles waged, and the only death was the mistaken shooting of an innocent civilian. While Dorr was sentenced to life in prison, the cause célèbre surrounding “the People’s Governor” led to his release after 20 months served. The plaque which marks his grave today still calls him “Governor.”
