Chapter 7

The next morning, I awoke enfolded in warmth, so cozy that I rejected wakefulness for as long as I could. It was realizing what, exactly, had enfolded me that finally coaxed me to crack my eyes open.

A gorgeous gilded collarbone greeted me. I followed dappled black and maroon scales up his handsome golden brown throat to his ember-flecked beard, then finally his sleeping face—or what I thought was sleeping, though a moment later, his eyes became slivers of fire, and the corners of his mouth lifted in contentment. A deep, warm breath issued from his nose, and he squeezed me closer against his bare chest.

“Hello, Orses,” I managed after some difficulty.

“Hello,” he purred in a growl that I felt all over my body, particularly in my stomach and groin.

If I thought I could suppress shivers, I was proven wrong as he leaned in, placing sweet kisses all over my cheeks and the bridge of my nose … then hotter ones as he worked his way down to my chin, jaw, and neck.

“Gods below.” I groaned and, somehow able to find my brain for a brief moment, asked, “Where is Iset?”

“I sent her to the library.” His tongue skimmed along my pulse, then at the very edge of the shell of my ear, which I could feel becoming unbearably hot. “I wanted to be alone with you.”

My body responded readily, especially when his lips met mine, but I was (barely) able to collect my thoughts. “What time is … it…? When are we … when are we leaving for the … the thing?” I breathed.

Orses paused, looking into my eyes, and I cursed inwardly as the spark in his gaze died. He sighed. “Tonight. You are right. I should prepare myself.”

We could always prepare with some wild screwing, I nearly suggested, but I well knew I’d already killed the mood. I allowed him to release me, though I did manage to keep him hovering above me.

“Should I leave you alone, or...?”

He hesitated. “Yes. I should fortify my mind. Steel my nerves.” Then, after another pause, he added, “I apologize if I….”

“No!” I said quickly. “No, that was, er, quite the pleasant awakening. It’s just, I don’t want to … I don’t know, distract you.“

What in the stars’ names was I saying? Of course I wanted to distract him! Stupid, stupid ass.

He nodded in understanding and sat up, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. He didn’t seem offended or angry so much as exhausted. I should have let him have his moment.

I rose and squeezed his shoulder. “When shall I come back?”

“Let’s not make it too late in the evening. Meet me at the third hour after noon. The nights are much shorter now, but I want to leave the mountain during daylight. Make certain to eat. Keep your strength up.”

As I slid out of bed to don my slippers, I looked at him in question. “Am I like to need my strength?”

“Perhaps not … but one never knows.
