RIGGINS

The wind rattling the windows stirs me awake. That and the wriggle of a certain luscious ass up against my dick. With the only sleeping bag in the shanty and our outerwear, we’d built ourselves a bed in front of the cookstove. Apparently, during the night, we’d cuddled close for warmth.

I stop myself just short of groaning. I don’t want to wake Clara. Not when I have a raging boner pressed up against her.

It’s just a physiological response, I tell myself as I get up to rekindle the fire. It’s just the result of the high-stress situation we’ve found ourselves in. The closeness of her body to mine. The roar of the fire.

But as I turn back to watch the light from the fire dance across the smooth curve of her cheek, I know those are bullshit excuses. It’s not just science that has me harder than a mountain. It’s Clara. Only Clara.

Those are thoughts and feelings I can’t have. She’s Harris’s little sister. You don’t mess around with your teammate’s sister. Granted, he isn’t a teammate now. But he’s still one of my best friends. And you don’t sleep with your best friend’s sister. No matter how much your body and heart might cry for it.

The wind kicks up, shaking the shanty. I start toward the window, but Clara bolts upright, a scream on her lips. I abandon my mission and kneel beside her, pulling her against my chest. She threads her arms around me and holds me tight with the grip of a warrior. I murmur nonsensical words as I gently stroke her back.

“It’s just the wind,” I say, feeling her heart pound a mile a minute against my bare chest. “You’re safe.”

“I had a terrible dream,” she says, at last, her voice so shaky, so thin, my heart fractures.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“We were climbing down the mountain. We couldn’t find Bubba. And I could barely see you through the storm.” She takes a shallow breath. “Then, the ground shook. The ice cracked and you fell into it. I couldn’t get to you.”

The break in my heart grows wider. “You’re safe. I’m here.”

“I know.” She pulls back, her brown eyes wide. “I always feel safe with you.”

And despite my resolve from a few minutes before, I can’t seem to stop myself from lowering my head to capture her lips.

This kiss is more gentle than the last. Like a meeting of two old friends. More healing than punishing. And still completely off-limits.

I pull away and Clara moves with me. “Why did you stop?”

I shake my head. “I can’t do this to your brother.”

“I’d rather you didn’t do this to my brother either.” She grins. “The last time I checked, you were kissing me.”

“You know what I mean.”

She leans back to study me. “Do you want to keep kissing me?”

“More than anything.” The words come out almost like a growl.

“Then kiss me. I swear Harris won’t care as you buy me breakfast in the morning and call me.
