Chapter 13

Weeks passed in what felt like the blink of an eye and with each passing day, Richard and I settled more into our new routines.

I usually worked in the afternoon and him in the morning, the different schedules complicating things even as I adapted to it all. Even through the odd hours, we’d made time together, whether it was me stopping by his work while he was buried in papers just to keep him company or drop off lunch, or sometimes he’d stop by the diner to finish his work.

The latter happened more often to the point everyone in the diner knew him now, Ms. Grand only shaking her head at him when he showed up with his proverbial mountain of paperwork.

I’d asked her once if him showing up would be a problem and her response had been better than I ever dared to hope for.

She’d leveled an amused smile my way before shaking her head. “That man is head over heels in love with you and as long as he orders something while he does his paperwork, I’ll treat him like any other customer. That being said, don’t let him distract you from work. Keep that in mind and I don’t mind him being here.”

I’d be lying if I said having Richard there didn’t make my day better. Even if it was just a split-second’s worth of a smile when I was starting to wear down or being able to sit with him during my lunch and chat.

It was everything I’d ached for over the years.

And tomorrow we both had the day off, a rare but wonderful occasion. Which of course meant tonight I had to have a nightmare that sent me straight out of bed.

Despite the weeks that’d passed since my father’s death, his ghost still haunted me, memories of the threats he’d given and the pain he’d unleashed on multiple occasions pulling to the front of my unguarded mind.

Like tonight, phantom pain from broken beer bottles or whatever else he’d managed to get his hands on swept over me, and with every passing minute the urge to get up and run increased.

I didn’t want to run anywhere in particular, but the urge wouldn’t quiet. It was still dark out so taking a walk wasn’t an option—I preferred doing that with Richard anyway since the scenery was downright gorgeous—but where did that leave me?

I could pace the room, but now that I looked around, the walls seemed to close in, and I groaned internally.

The urge to wake Richard and curl into the natural safety he brought gnawed at my gut, nearly consuming everything else, but I shoved it back. He may not work tomorrow but that doesn't mean he should have to deal with my mess.

He knew about the nightmares, of course. It’s hard to hide them when I wake up screaming from some of them. Last time he’d found me in the kitchen, he’d asked me to wake him, but it still sat wrong with me. I shouldn’t need anyone’s help for this.
