CHAPTER ELEVEN

I was adding the last of the ingredients to my Summer Sunset Roasted Crab and Corn Chowder when Jerry called. I wiped my hands briskly on my apron and reached for my phone.

“Are you busy?” he asked as soon as I answered.

“Not now. Soup’s set, it just has to simmer for the required twelve minutes exactly on medium low before I transfer it to the hearth out front to keep warm. We open in twenty minutes.”

“Hmm. I haven’t had lunch yet. What did you make?”

I told him the name, and he made another humming noise. “That’s a mouthful, but it sounds delicious. What does it do?”

I sighed. Sometimes getting Jerry to get to the point required a bit of maneuvering. I read aloud to him: “Put away those shades, kick up your feet and face due west on your favorite porch and enjoy the sunset of a lifetime with that favorite someone special. Good for one week. ”

“Well, my someone special probably wouldn’t give it the appreciation it deserves, but it sounds delicious just the same. Maybe I’ll stop by if I can tear myself away from this desk. And the phone. Dumb thing has been ringing off the hook.”

I sighed. “Jerry, why did you call me?”

“Oh yeah. Right. Well, did I mention we were able to recover the masks from the heist?”

“Um, no, you didn’t.”

“Well, we did. Found them several hours later in the dumpster in the alley next to the bank after the heist. One werewolf and wizard mask and robes, coming up.”

It was a good clue. But I wasn’t sure how it was supposed to help our case if we didn’t have any DNA to compare it to.

“That’s nice, Jerry, right?”

“But it is. I also had Lyle and his crime scene technicians go over that white sedan we found in the orchard. We know the corpse belonged to Mel Woodbury. What we weren’t sure of is whether he was one of the men responsible for the robbery of the First and One Half Bank. But Lyle’s CSTs recovered fibers from the front passenger seat. They match the mask, Juli. We know who our werewolf was.”

“That’s great news.” I thought of something else. “Are we sure the werewolf was Mel? What if it was his partner?”

“Good thinking, but we also recovered several fibers from Mel’s clothing. The other mask, the wizard mask, has white hair. We didn’t find any of that on the victim.”

I nodded, the phone to my ear as I peeked around the door of the kitchen and caught Brownie’s eye by the bar. I made a picking up motion and he gave a nod. I often had Brownie help me pour and hang my daily soups in the cauldron and then over the fire. The kettle was heavy, and the cauldron itself was made of cast iron and was nearly ten pounds on its own.

While I waited for Brownie to finish what he was doing, another thought occurred to me. “Jerry, have you had
