Twelve

Mom grabs me and we hit the deck as the gnome fires the shotgun. Thankfully, he’s a shitty shot, so he misses us entirely and ends up hitting the bouncer in the shoulder.

“I thought you said he wasn’t going to shoot!” I yell at Cal.

“I didn’t think he would!”

Mom and Dad are up in an instant, but it takes me longer because that little bit of movement is all it took for the bar to start spinning around my head.

Oh man, I’m going to be sick.

I get to my feet in time to take a fist to the chin from the bouncer. The blow rocks my world and I collapse again. I lay on the ground for a moment, trying to will the world into place. But I’m there for too long, as the bouncer’s able to shamble up to me and press a big knee into my chest.

“Let go of her!” Cal says as his husky form appears and he charges. He leaps, but the bouncer grabs him by the neck and tosses him over the bar. Cal yelps as he crashes through glasses and bottles.

“I said no shape-shifters!” The bouncer says as he keeps the pressure on my chest. Guess this dude’s a stickler for the rules.

I start coughing and wheezing as the weight of his leg forces the air from my lungs. I try to push him off, but this damn poison’s got me weak. I’m sure this wouldn’t be a fair fight if I was healthy, but tonight fighting fair is just going to get me killed.

So, I decide to play dirty.

My hand drifts to my belt and I pull out my knife. I jab it into his thigh and the bouncer screams as he backs away.

I roll over and take a gasping breath. Then I get up, shuffle over to the bar and grab an unbroken pint glass. The bouncer comes at me, and I hurl the glass at him with all the strength I’ve got.

Thankfully, I’m not a terrible shot.

The glass hits him square in the face, shattering into bits and sending him stumbling long enough for me to deliver a running knee to his forehead. He drops like a sack of potatoes.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

The world is still swaying worse than a teacup ride in the middle of the ocean, so I have to brace myself against the bar. I turn around to see how my folks are doing only to find that I’m the slow dancer at this party. In the time it took me to take care of glass-jaw back there, they’ve knocked out the bartender, tossed the shotgun aside, and pinned both Bill and the gnome against the wall. Dad’s holding the gnome, Mom’s holding Bill.

Cal appears from over the bar, he’s wobbling, probably from how hard he hit the wall. I feel you, buddy. I feel seasick and I’m not even on water.

“I’m guessing you and Tucker have one of those on-again, off-again friendships,” I say.
