CHAPTER 13
I stared at the record in my hands. âThis record belonged to my grandma.â
âHoney, the whole Victrola belonged to your grandma.â
âNo wonder it looked so familiar,â I said. I put the record back gently and closed the lid. I ran my hand over the mahogany cabinet. âI canât believe you have this.â
There was a price tag hanging from the crank, but I couldnât bring myself to check it. If I still had a car, I would have gladly sold it to buy back this piece of my familyâs history. I wonder if Marcus would notice if I traded his cute little loaner SUV. Unable to help myself, I looked at the tag. âOuch.â I couldnât afford it. Maybe, back when I was working for a tech company and socking most of my paycheck away for a down payment on a house I never got around to buying, I could have, but not now that Iâd invested my entire nest egg into Sip & Spin.
âI know, itâs a little much, but itâs worth that easily. Then again, itâs been on the floor for ages, and youâre the first person to show any real interest in it. Why donât you take it home with you?â
I shook my head sadly. âI canât.â
âSure you can. Iâm sure your mom wouldnât mind.â
âMy mom?â I asked.
Darlene laughed. Hers was a pleasant laugh. Like the Victrola, it sounded like magic. âBea dropped it off on consignment a few years ago. It never sold, obviously. Itâs been taking up valuable floor space, but I knew that the right person would come along eventually. I should have guessed it would be a Jessup. Itâs yours if you want it. Need some help loading it up?â
âI donât think it will fit in my car,â I told her, my head spinning. Marcusâs loaner SUV was too small.
âSwing by anytime, and Iâll have my guys help you load it.â
I was already trying to figure out where to put it. It wasnât fair to Maggie to bring it to Tansyâs. It was a piece of our family history. It belonged to all of us. At Sip & Spin, we could share it with the world. Well, not the world, maybe, but Cedar River and the greater Austin area.
I caressed the lid once more. âNot a problem. Give me a day or two to get a truck, and Iâll be back.â
âTake your time.â Darlene said. âI was about to rotate it back to the warehouse. I try to keep stock moving so nothing stays on the floor long if it isnât selling. The Victrola would have been back in storage for at least three months if youâd come in tomorrow.â
âThen itâs a good thing I came in today,â I said.
âIt is,â she agreed.
âThe idea of rotating your stock constantly is a good one. Tansy does that at the shop, too. Always rearranging and moving merchandise so it gets new eyes on it even if the same shopper comes in every week.â
âOh, I canât take credit for that.
