Eternal Tales: The Circle of Six

Once upon a time, the three Sisters traveled the world. They had a long journey and took turns carrying the Song of the Soul between them, for it was heavy and strong.

While together they had great magic, the Sisters were also isolated, and the world was out of balance, lost in chaos.

The first Sister spoke to the Water, asking for direction on their journey.

The second Sister sang to the Air, asking for counsel on their journey.

The third Sister called to the Earth, asking for guidance on their journey.

And then the first Sister whispered to the Fire, and the three Sisters danced in the light of the flames, asking for love on their journey.

The Gods heard the Sisters, and were pleased with their dance. The next morning, the Sisters woke to discover a golden child, shining like a star, floating weightless in the air before them.

The Gods spoke through the child, and told the Sisters each would be allowed to choose a Consort, a male whose gifts would harmonize with all three Sisters. The Consorts would help the Sisters on their journey through the world, and receive untold blessings in return.

But just one Sister could choose a mate at a time. Once every thousand years, while taking her turn carrying the burden of the Song of the Soul, only then could each Sister make her choice.

When the last Sister had chosen, the world would know balance. The three Sisters and Consorts would form a Circle, the Circle of Six. Then the shining child pointed to each Sister in turn:

The first Sister would choose the first Consort, at the rising of the Sun.

In a thousand years more, the second Sister would choose the second Consort, as mankind descended into darkness.

A thousand more years would pass, and the third Sister would choose the final Consort, at the beginning, when all things change.

The Sisters bowed in joy and gratitude. But before the golden child faded as if mist, it whispered that all gifts come with a price. The Circle of Six would be called upon to both embrace and defeat Darkness, to utterly lose itself before it began, to be wholly destroyed, to be reborn.

And they lived ever after.
