“What the hell are you doing? Get out of the way! That stuff doesn’t work right around here. Move!”

Tabitha shoved him aside and viciously jabbed her fork at the corpse that set off the trap. It was a flurry of strikes, a spray of blood, and then a thump as it collapsed and brought him out of his trance.

Her face was speckled with blood, and the bloody fork was on the ground next to the dispatched Zee. She was panting but remained ready with her fists balled up. Brock surveyed the situation. The undead that once made a gauntlet now freely roamed through the aisle, blocking Brock and Tabitha from crossing. The cabinets they had stood on now had Zees crawling on top of them. With the nearest undead gone, they could spare a moment to gather their thoughts and devise a plan. Though the crash had attracted the deads’ attention, activating the trap and launching half-corpses through the room, they were still once the commotion had settled, and a few of them had even lost the funnels attached to their ears.

They had a few moments, but before long, the dead would start wandering, groping, and creeping their way until Brock and Tabitha would be forced to move. But where they would go remained in question. Brock became aware that Tabitha was waving and trying to get his attention. He blinked a few times and accidentally shone his headlamp in her face, so she turned away. Realizing his mistake, he nodded. She emphasized something on the floor with her flashlight then lit the far wall with the solid metal door. To the right was the path that led out of this terrible place.

Brock shrugged and pointed at the exit. She emphasized the door with her hands, then made a gun with her fingers, then acted like she was going to stab the corpse on the floor with an invisible spear. Suddenly Brock understood. It was the weapon room. He nodded.

Fine. But how are we getting there? he wondered, looking over a slim hall of dead hands, mouths and entrails all at various stages of rot.

She made a gesture with her fingers like a person walking, then pointed at the dead.

What the hell? She wants to walk across them?

Crossing over top of them by stepping on their backs was a horrible idea, and he didn’t particularly like the thought of exposing his feet and ankles to them willingly. But before he could object, Tabitha had already lifted a leg and was preparing to step on the first one just before it exited the path and crawled towards them.

She looked back at him, pressed a finger to her lips, then let the full force of her foot down on the dead’s back, swung her leg through, and pushed off, landing hard on the back of another. She stumbled and looked like she was going to fall but regained her balance by holding on to the shelves to her left. Once more she leapt, landing nimbly on the other side.
