Cicur

anic built up in Cicur’s chest the moment the hand had grabbed him. Tension overtook his body as he found himself frozen in time.

“Cicur?” Nirashta’s voice came, quiet, and concerned. “Are you—”

“I’m all right.” He turned around, embarrassed at his sudden flinching. If she were to ask, he would have to make up an excuse. Shock seemed to spread from him to Nirashta as she brought her hands to her chest, balling her hands into each other.

“I get the sense that you aren’t welcome. I mean with Vercus.” Knowing that if he were to say anything bad about the group he had come with, Soulcage would do whatever he could to kill him.

“I don’t believe I know what you’re talking about.”

“I mean…you’re just the odd one out, besides Joseph. The two of you don’t seem to feel comfortable. I’ve noticed it…”

“I can assure you, we’re both fine.” The situation as a whole was off to him. Nirashta seemed to be pushing him for answers.

“Okay. If you say so.”

Cicur pulled open the door, attempting to look for Vercus outside. As of the moment the cool breeze blew onto his face, the force from a recurring presence called him outside.

“Oh, Cicur?” She tapped his shoulder, although it felt like she wasn’t even there in the midst of the dramatic pull. “I think you’re a great protector to Vercus.”

Able to turn around, he faced her, confused. Hadn’t he, in the heat of the moment, attacked Asena? This woman made no sense to him—nor, he concluded, to anyone. “And I can tell you’re not an Adiel.”

She must be some sort of sorcerer.

“I don’t believe that you could know such a thing,” he said, shifting his feet to face his exit. “I don’t believe in—”

“I’m no physic. I can just tell. I’ve always been like this.”

“Is there a problem if I’m not?”

“No, no!” She frantically waved her hands back and forth. “It just confuses me. I don’t see how or why you would suddenly join Vercus. Have you known him very long?”

“I don’t think that’s very important, ma’am.” Taking his chance, he walked outside, the desire to follow whatever was calling him growing in strength. “I have orders.”

“I understand, and I’ll see you later. I will have armor for your crew.”

Crew. It’s been a while since I’ve heard that. He nodded a final time and walked out into the night, his mind going back to the one word: crew. His first thought was of his brother, for he had been a fisherman before he was a soldier. Many days, Cicur would tag along and get loads of attention from the crew, due to how young he was then. He truly missed every one of those moments. Ever since Raysahi passed away, his coworkers would visit him. The most frequent visitor was Raysahi’s second-in-command, Neith. She was a short and feisty woman, and Cicur loved her for it. The last time he had seen her was before he joined the guard, two years ago.

His thoughts raged
