CHAPTER NINETEEN

With gratitude, Caterina accepted a second espresso from Patricia Benvenuti the next morning. She was exhausted from the long night and there was an unpleasant void left when the adrenalin wore off.

“Dr. Rosselli took the body to the coroner at about midnight. We let the party guests leave just before then. Most of them are at the Hotel Regency in Piazza D’Azeglio and will be there through tomorrow and some, even longer.” She was in the magistrate’s office briefing her boss and making a plan for any follow-up. “Captain Gentile from the Montughi Commissariato has charge of the investigation. Max and I translated for him during the group interview to move things along. Most everyone on the scavenger hunt noticed at least one of the three helpers wearing armor in the Hall of the Cavalcade, but those who tried to get information out of any one of them found that none of them spoke English so the interactions were short, if at all.”

“Were there three or four costumed knights?” Paolo Benigni asked, thumbing through her report. “I couldn’t determine from what is here.”

“Four men, but only three costumes.” She flipped through her copy. “Look on page four. Emilio Esposito left early. He took off his costume in the cantina where all of the guides, waiters, musicians, and helpers changed during the evening. He didn’t know who used the armor after he left. Nobody was in the cantina when he took off the costume.”

“Was his departure planned?”

“He says he told Beatrice Forzoni, the event planner, that he couldn’t stay past six. She says she didn’t remember him telling her this, but that it wouldn’t have mattered since the scavenger hunt was done by then. She used some of the other costumed helpers during dinner, but just wanted two wearing armor at the door nearest to the ballroom to stop any guests from wandering back into the museum. She thought Emilio was one of the two, but she admits that she didn’t check on this.”

“What about the other personnel who were actually in the museum during the dinner?”

“From what Bea told Captain Gentile, the closure of the museum is a complex process requiring that each room and cabinet be checked and locked. Katia Ponti was in charge of a team of three guides and they methodically went through the museum together. They didn’t see anyone else as they made their rounds. The three assistants were finishing up in the large Japanese gallery when Katia went on to the Hall of the Cavalcade. She found the body almost immediately and raised the alarm. She says nobody else was in the hall as far as she could tell, but of course you know what it is like in that part of the museum. It would be easy to hide and slip away unnoticed.”

The magistrate closed the report, steepled his hands under his chin, and asked, “What did Dr. Rosselli say about time and mode of death?”

“He estimated that the man was killed between
