For days, Codrin refused to talk again about his memories. Refused to even remember, running from his past. Now and then, there were flashes in his mind, figments of his life. Most of them were violent, and that frightened him. He knew now that his past belonged to a man of power, and the only man of power in his new life was Count Irvath. He did not want to be like the Count. He would hate to be like the Count and, each time new memories came to him, he shook his head vigorously to chase them away. Sometimes it worked; sometimes it didn’t. Most of the day, he ran from Pireska, coming late into the house. The old woman waited patiently until his guard was down. It was midnight, and he was almost asleep at the table when she placed Shadow in his hand.

Unconsciously, Codrin gripped the hilt and opened his eyes abruptly.

“Shadow,” the sword whispered in his mind.

Mesmerized, he gripped the hilt tighter, and images came to him. He was alone in a forest, watching six men trying to rape a woman, the first time he had used Shadow in a fight. Everything moved forward at a strange speed. It took only a few seconds to end, and he gasped, letting the sword fall on the floor. “I killed five men,” he whispered.

“There must be a reason for that.” Pireska took his hand between hers.

“They tried to rape a woman.” Codrin felt that the woman was important to him but could not remember why, or her name. “She killed the sixth one. A strong woman, trained to fight.”

“That is a good reason to … punish them.” But to kill them? “Do you know the woman?”

“Yes … and no.”

Pireska picked the sword up from the floor and pushed it into his hand again. Another fragment of his life came to him. A battle. That night, Codrin slept badly, in a sort of trance filled with strange memories. He turned in his bed, and two times kicked Ildeko away until she chose to sleep on the floor.

Late in the morning, Ildeko woke up in bed. Codrin was gone, and she saw him through the window, sitting on the bench, head in hands. She hurried out, then with a stroke of intuition returned to pick a small object from a decrepit cabinet. Reaching Codrin, she raised his head, playing with his hair. He avoided looking in her eyes and lowered his head again. “Tell me,” she said, gently.

“I am married,” Codrin whispered, without raising his head. “I am sorry. I did not know.”

“I knew. This is your wedding ring.” She took his hand and placed the ring on his finger. “You are my lover.”

“It’s not fair to you.” For the first time, Codrin dared to look in her eyes. “I have a son with her. I can’t remember his name.”

“Then you have two sons. I am sure that you will take care of our child too.”

“It’s strange. I don’t remember my wife, only her name, Saliné.
