“Damn!” Digby slapped the side of the roof with his bone gauntlet, splashing rainwater with his claws.

That was when a steady pounding came from the other door that led to the roof. Digby snapped his head back to face it. The pounding increased, as if more fists were joining in with every second. Raising his hand, he cast Blood Forge again to barricade the door. The revenants on the other side kept trying. Even with his spells, it was only a matter of time. Any second, a claw would break through. Digby raised his hand to cast another Forge just as a familiar face passed through the door.

“Oh thank god, you made it.” A projected Rebecca rushed over to him.

“Of course I made it.” Digby dropped his hand to his side. “Now tell me how I can escape this death trap of a building.”

“You can’t.” She shook her head.

“What do you mean, I can’t?” Digby’s eye twitched.

“I didn’t have time to map the building so I can’t say for sure. But I ran all the way up here with revs swiping at me.”

“I wish I could have seen the disappointment on their faces when they realized you weren’t really there.” Digby let out a mirthless laugh.

“Yes, it was very funny.” She groaned, before glancing off in the direction of the van. Her eyes bulged as soon as she found it. The revenants had begun to swarm the vehicle enough to stop its progress all together. Digby’s brute continued to defend the van, practically having to climb on top to swat foes away. Rebecca’s hands began to shake. “Oh my god, my body is in there.”

Rain poured down Digby’s face as he turned away from the despair in her eyes. There was nothing he could do. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For insisting we come here.” He clenched his fist. “For insisting on killing the revenants. For everything.”

“Shut up.” Rebecca spun toward him baring her teeth. “Don’t talk like we’re already doomed down there.”

“But there’s nothing I can do from up here.” Digby lowered his head.

Instead of responding, she darted away, running to the other side of the roof and sprinting around its perimeter. She stopped short on one side.

“Get over here, Dig.” She flicked her gaze toward him. “You’re going to get out of this, and then you’re going to come up with a way to save us down there.”

“Have you seen me lately?” He hobbled his way over to her as the clawing at the door to the roof continued. “I don’t have the ability to—”

“I don’t care about your stupid missing foot.” She swiped a hand though the air as raindrops fell through her illusionary body. “So shut up and jump.” She stabbed a finger off to the side.

Digby furrowed his brow and approached the edge, finding her pointing to a building beside the one he stood on. Another hotel from the look of it. It was much shorter than the inferno he stood on but it was just as expensive looking.
