Chapter 3

I couldn’t say the morning after wasn’t a little awkward, at least that’s how I felt, but neither Sonia nor Eve seemed to be changed by what happened between us. Well, that wasn’t strictly true: Eve seemed a little more clinging, she smiled more, and the emotions in her face when she did so were more noticeable; or maybe she had always behaved like that, and I had been the one that didn’t notice it. Or didn’t want to notice it.

I wasn’t completely comfortable with it, for a multitude of reasons, but it didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would.

Despite what I might have wished, the night with them helped me. I wasn’t as nervous the next morning, there was a weight missing from my shoulders, and I was ready to continue with the mission.

We started moving after breakfast, and it didn’t take us long to find signs of the reapers. Sonia put a hand against my shoulder and held me back, and I gazed at her, wondering why we were stopping. Eve almost crashed into us, but held herself at the last moment.

The seconds dragged on and on, and my heartbeat became so loud I was certain Eve was hearing it, but eventually Sonia returned and I could breathe easier. “Don’t scare me like that again.” I murmured under my breath before she could open her mouth, and she smirked at me.

“I’m not some damsel in distress, Mara. I can take care of myself.” I scoffed and made her smile once more. “They found something, I think it’s a deer, and they’re pursuing it. We should stay put for now. I doubt they’ll resist the temptation to eat, and only then start back, but I figure their pace won’t be as harsh. We just need to follow them back and see what happens.”

“And if nothing does, this whole thing was a bust.” I shook my head, unhappy with how it all went down. I had hoped we could find about those the reapers were fighting, but it seemed we wouldn’t be that lucky. It was frustrating. So much time lost away from those I loved, and for nothing.

We stayed put for hours, and it was a struggle, but eventually we moved out, turning back on our path, following the reapers the way we came. The tension that had been bothering me the
