As he was leaving her home, Emily Sounder hugged Tanner, but then she stepped back to look at him.

“Tell me something, Cody. Have you had a good life?”

“Yes,” Tanner said. “I’ve had a good life.”

“And have you found a good woman?”

“That’s a yes, too.”

“I’m glad, son. And know this, Cody, your mother loved you more than anything.”

“I know she loved me,” Tanner said. “She told me so every day of my life.”

Tanner had just driven away from Mrs. Sounder’s home when his phone alerted him that he had a text. It was from Thomas Lawson.

He pulled off the road and onto a gravel strip so that he could read the message.

Another picture has been discovered that seems to show the same little boy who was in the photo with your mother. It’s a very clear shot, a close-up, and the boy appears to be older. The photo was found inside the trailer of a man named Dave Cully. Cully is deceased, but he was a member of your late uncle’s gang.

Tanner downloaded the attachment and stared at the photo. Although the boy in the photo was young, so very young, Tanner was certain he had met the man recently, had met him and felt a connection to him.

After clearing the photo, he searched his memory for a number he’d been given by Joe Pullo. The man on the other end answered after two rings.

“Kelly, here.”

“Finn, it’s Tanner… there’s something I need to tell you.”
