Art sat up from his bed and began preparing ramen, chopping a few vegetables and proteins to add to the broth. While the water cooked the noodles, he checked on his messages, remembering that his professor had sent some important-sounding mail:

From: Professor Connors

Subject: Research scholarship – please apply!

Message:

Dear Art,

The department recently gained a grant to fund a focused research project for three years. I recall you had an interest in cell regeneration using lizard DNA, and I think it could make for a great project given some recent articles, interest and investments in that area.

If you’d like to write a proposal, I’d be happy to recommend it to the scholarship board. I’ll be on the board, so I will have quite a large say in who receives the scholarship, though it’s not my decision alone. The successful applicant will have enough funds to set up a small lab on campus or in a private establishment – funds allowing – if you had a lab in mind. This could be REALLY exciting, it’s a terrific opportunity for a final year student like you.

To be completely transparent, this opportunity is by recommendation only, but I’ve also invited Xun to apply, who you may know from within the department. The board will only consider my highest-performing students, and that means the two of you.

There’s only one scholarship available, therefore you’ll be competing with Xun. So, it’s tough competition, but you’re more than capable of winning the scholarship.
