“Declan, Adam, and I have resigned as the Western Triumvirate.”

The conference room, packed with close to fifty supernaturals, went utterly quiet at Connor’s announcement. His mental influence was subtle yet effective: all eyes were on him, all mouths stayed shut.

He’d told me the news last night before I’d fallen asleep in his arms, but it was still shocking to hear it.

“As you all know, yesterday our home was attacked by Daniel Engström and his nest. Although the threat was neutralized, our true enemy remains. We will not sit and wait for another attack but bring the fight to Morrighan. As our journey takes us overseas, we cannot in good conscience continue in our roles as servants of this nation.”

Adam stepped to Connor’s side. Though impossible, it seemed that the room grew even more silent. He stood straight and tall thanks to Wyn’s healing. But for the white strip over his eyes, he was the picture of strength and health.

“Mages—I’ve spoken with many of you in the last twenty-four hours as to the nature of our fight and what’s at stake. I want to reiterate that none of you are expected to journey with us. The danger is immense. Some of us will not return.” His focus shifted around the room, lingering on familiar auras, and a soft smile graced his lips. “Your loyalty, companionship, and thirst for knowledge have truly given my life meaning. I’m forever grateful to each and every one of you.”

Declan came forward next, his crystalline blue eyes brimming with emotion as he addressed his pack. The message was the same: there would be no ill will toward those who decided not to join us, the risk was high and the reward uncertain.

And finally, Connor addressed the vampires in the room. His nest had been diminished in the last few years, but those who remained had called him master for a hundred years or more. But they’d never been slaves to him. For Connor, the title meant family and loyalty. He was their protector. Their home. Though I recognized all of them, I felt a pang as I realized how little I knew about them individually. And how difficult the next words would be for Connor.

“My steady and loyal companions, you are released from the bond of our nest,” he said, his eyes dark emerald with feeling. “I no longer stand here as your master, but as your friend. You’re aware of the risks. The complexity of what we’re hoping to accomplish. Joining us will not be a matter of compulsion, but rather, a choice you alone must make. Janelle Olivier”—he nodded to the Midwestern Prime—“is here to offer herself as a new master should you want to remain nest-bound. For those of you who wish to take a different path, I send you freely with my gratitude and love.” His focus broadened to the room. “We’ll leave you now to decide.”

The former Western Triumvirate exchanged glances and strode together from the conference room. Conversations erupted the moment the doors shut.
