I Look Across the Water, and I Think of All the Things

Frank and Laura were up and out by the time Jo was coherent and dressed Friday morning. She was tired lately, sleeping harder and later than she ought to be. Frank had left a note on the kitchen counter. Since the weather was supposed to turn sunny, they were down at Plancich Bay if she wanted to join them. She’d tapped the little scrap of paper, smiled at how much more personal it was than a cold, sans-serif text.

Jo scanned the sky as she stood on the back porch. The air was wet. The trees were bent and spoke back to the steady breeze. Popcorn puffs of clouds raced by as she surveyed the serene oval of blue above the clearing defining the property.

She plunked down on the top step, deciding if she wanted to head out to Plancich Bay, get back to chasing a story that was heating up fast, write up her notes, follow up with Tolliver’s hiker friend, chase down Brian Stewart, or just sit here and think about what her life had become. The step creaked beneath her. Spot came up and nudged his brown snout under her elbow. She wrapped an arm around him and leaned in, fingers wrapped in his wiry mutt fur.

The dog’s ears came up. She followed the swivel of his head. At the edge of the Technicolor green clearing, past the chicken coop, she saw a flash of gold and a flick of black disappear into the forest. Had to be Paula. She stood to go after the cat, but before she could, she and Spot both looked over at the sound of tires on gravel, their next guest temporarily hidden by the tall evergreens edging the driveway. He stood at attention and his whole ass wiggled. A few seconds later Valerie Larsen’s old wood-paneled Jeep emerged.

The creak and slam of the door rang off the house and the trees as Valerie got out, shining chestnut hair bouncing along with her. She stuffed her hands in the pockets of her jeans. Despite Jo’s bundled layers, her visitor wore only a purple v-neck tee and a lightweight jacket.

Jo met her halfway across the drive. “Chickens are doing great.”

“I know.” Valerie grinned and shrugged. She inclined her head the sky high above them. “It’s been three days straight of dark and rain, and I’m getting a little stir-crazy. Steve’s got the kids this afternoon. Nice morning to be on the water – and Tolliver mentioned you might have a particular interest in, say, visiting Mill Creek Ravine?”

Jo took a second look at Valerie and decided the woman was insinuating what she hoped she was – a once-over of a crime scene from a hard to get angle. Tolliver must not have held out out about Jo grilling him, because Valerie still didn’t seem at all pissed.

Jo glared up at the sky, wondering what secrets it divulged to Islanders that it hid from her.
