Chapter Ten

Susannah

The footfalls grew nearer.

“Abigail, are you in here?” Susannah heard a snort. “I know you are, I can smell the herbs. Lavender, mint and thyme. Perfect for confusing fae senses.”

Susannah cursed. She hadn't realized the scent that protected her from the fae's drive to hunt would also give her away. Shifting as quietly as possible in the straw, she worked a leg free in case she needed to run. But her limbs were impossibly heavy. She gasped at the effort.

“Abigail, it's me. Laurence.”

Susannah blinked. Was he the fae from the parlor? The one who'd removed the thrall?

Had Prince Charming come to save her?

Wriggling from the straw, Susannah fell to the stable floor, manually lifting her legs from the pile. “I'm here,” she said, hastily picking straw from her hair.

“Thank the gods.” He sounded genuinely relieved. A moment later, the lanky fae was before her, his mop of dark hair sticking up as if he'd just mussed it. His eyes widened. “So that's what you look like beneath that mask!”

Susannah smirked. “Impressed?”

The fae blushed to the pointed tips of his ears. “I'd hardly say no to a dance with you.”

“I think I've had enough of dancing for a while.” She wrinkled her nose in distaste.

“Here,” Laurence said as if suddenly remembering himself and his manners, “I'll help you up. Misman told me you would be here. We're going to load you into Lord Braam's carriage—he's the Lord of the Hollow Court. He's agreed to take you south, as far as you need to go.”

Susannah furrowed her brow. “Why would you help me?”

The tall fae shrugged. “We're not all bad.” Laurence sniffed. “Lord Braam's a low fae, like Misman. You won't need those herbs with them. The low fae don't suffer from our—condition.”

“The Wild Hunt,” she supplied.

He nodded, tight lipped.

“Do we go now?”

“The guards return to their posts at the top of every hour. We need to move when they’re not, if we want to avoid their attention. That leaves another three-quarters of an hour before we can leave the stables. I can bring you to Lord Braam’s carriage then.”

Susannah tapped at her lower lip, the remembered feel of his mouth on hers thrilling her even now. Forty-five minutes. Whatever would they do with the time?

—Oh, to be young, Abigail chimed in. —Why do I think you’re about to tackle this poor fae boy?

Be quiet! And I'd thank you not to peep. Because Abigail wasn’t wrong. Susannah had set her heart on him more than an hour ago—and that was an hour too long.

—Peep at you, little witch? As if I would do such a thing! Abigail snapped.

Susannah felt another sigh from the spirit.

—Still, I miss that feeling. The excitement, the foolishness of being young. Not to mention the heat of an illicit meeting. Although I never once cast a tilted beacon spell at your age.

Oh, go away, Susannah hissed.

—Come to think of it, bedding a fae would be the ultimate act of a forbidden love. I wonder whether I missed a good bit of fun there.
