* * *

Monroe sat in front of the grand piano in the sanctuary of the church. It was the quietest time of the week at the church. Sunlight filtered in from the stained glass windows high above, and even the usual gloom that gathered in the ancient redwood beams overhead seemed to be gone.

The space was light and holy somehow, and utterly silent. This was where Monroe came to reconnect to themself. And to anyone else in the heavens who might happen to be listening.

Monroe leaned heavily against the piano’s music rack, and rested their head in their hand. With one finger, they plunked out the melody line of the song they had written for Rosalind. Softly, they sang the lyrics.

It’s pouring through me now

Light like the sun

Pure like rain

I’m reawakened

Reawakened

All because of your smile

Monroe never wrote pop music. And they never wrote lyrics. But here it was, delivered in a wild rush of inspiration that Monroe was still a little stunned by. That was all the confirmation they needed that they were on the right track with Rosalind.

Still, it wasn’t as simple as just getting her number and calling her up. No, there were matters to attend to first. For one thing, to the state of California Monroe was still Sarah J. Monroe.

Sarah. As if.

Aside from their mother, no one had called Monroe ‘Sarah’ for more than a decade. Monroe had tossed out their first name all the way back in their female-conforming, lesbian days in college. At the time, having a single name was a tribute to the lesbian music phenomenon Rhiannon, whom Monroe had just discovered. It also helped that Rhiannon was originally a Welsh goddess who went everywhere on her horse. Somehow Monroe just fit.

In the past three years, Monroe slowly evolved into a non-

binary soul whose essence matched their name. First the name was the thing. Then came the buzz cut, followed by the men’s clothes, followed by another shift toward truly gender neutral clothing. Jeans, for instance, were good. But cut was everything. Sometimes Monroe found they wanted to go more traditionally male, with a touch of

female thrown in. Baggie guy jeans with a cotton scarf thrown around their open-collared shirt became the default for a while.

Eventually, they ended up shopping online, and crafting the look and a persona that seemed to spring from their soul. All of it was a slow-burning discovery of self, and it lit Monroe up.

Now, one decade into this slow-moving revolution, Monroe was at a new turning point. For what remained was the paperwork of a formal name and gender change. It was something they had been meaning to get to since last Christmas. Yet, now the matter was more urgent than ever. This began the day after the party at Tenika’s house. Something about meeting Rosalind woke Monroe up, like a sudden brisk glass of ice water to the face. Now the fact that they were still “Sarah” on their passport and driver’s license seemed patently wrong. Not to mention embarrassing.
