âCOME, ATLAS,â CLARENCE urged. âI need help collecting what weâll need.â
Henry watched Christopher bathe Ellaâs face and neck. Her fever hadnât eased. The enchantment continued to pulse, flaring as it spread, as if it had a life of its own. Henry twiddled his thumbs and released a heavy sigh.
Christopher was so much like his father, yet the lad would never truly know how much. The Hierarch had been right; Christopher was the one the prophecy had been written about. The lad had no knowledge of his history until a few weeks ago. Heâd seemed resistant back then, but now he was ready to do whatever it took to save the girl and face... he didnât want to think about it.
âHenry, here. Eat something.â He took the bowl Jack offered and sniffed it.
Jack handed Christopher a bowl. âIâll sit with her. You go eat.â
Christopher waved the food away. âThanks, but Iâm not hungry.â
âIâm sure Peterâs not that bad a cook. You both need to eat while you can.â
Henry tasted the stew and screwed up his face.
Christopher sat next to him. âThat bad, hey?â
âIâve eaten worse.â
Christopher poked his spoon into the food. âSo how will it happen? You know, getting my powers back.â
Henry, happy to discard his meal, reached into his bag and pulled out the wooden box. He flipped open the lid and took out the orb. âFor twenty years, Christopher, Iâve kept it with me, dreading the day I would have to return it to you. Once your gift is returned, it will alter the balance of magic in the realm. I donât really know what will happen or what your gifts will be. I can only hope they are enough.â
Christopher touched the gnarled ball. Its knotted surface flickered with emerald-green light. He grabbed it, and it pulsed. Small sparks shot from the orb, darting into Christopherâs hand.
Henry sighed. It was the part of his grandson that had been missing for so long.
Christopher rotated the orb. âWhat about Albert, Rose and Joseph? The longer weâre away from them... I owe them my life, Henry.â
âHopefully, theyâve had news from Canameer. I told Albert if anything were to happen while we were away, to make his way to Corn Fallow. I have friends there. Theyâll be safe with them.â
âThank you, Henry.â He smiled.
James dumped an armful of wood by the fire and clapped Christopher on the back. Henry glanced at his grandson. The lad was lucky to have such good friends. Heâd need them by his side to help him through the days ahead.
