Jud, of course, told the story whenever the chance presented itself. The appearance fee probably prompted him to tell it even more often. The story about the Great Sandolaré who was outfished by the town pharmacist. Outangled by a local amateur whose fishing skills were sadly lacking. In fact, if the truth be known (and Jud, Henry, Doc as well, did everything in their power to keep this truth from Junior), Junior might be, pound for pound, one of the most unsuccessful fishermen in the Elkheart barring those who don’t fish at all.

But Junior has one dog-eared entry in his fishing journal that no one could take from him: the day he bested the best. An entry recorded for all time. The best kind of entry, a faithful account with witnesses, logging the biggest fish in his angling career. A completely honest entry based entirely on a lie.

Everything about his day is mentioned in his stream diary: the temperatures, air and water; the hatches; the river levels. The fact that Jud let him fish the best water even garners a note. Very little is written about Sandolaré.

Certainly the rainbow was brought to net through a most preposterous chain of unwitting, serendipitous events, and these events are committed to writing with veracity, from the accidental cast to the miraculous landing. Jud’s lie to Conrad, a lie based solely on the truth, receives its own page.

But it matters not at all how the fish was fooled and then taken. For in angling, there is no greater truth than the netted trout.
