Jared met them outside the mansion, Nick and Paul in tow, shortly before two o’clock. He looked annoyed.

“I don’t even want to know how you guys got in that house,” he complained.

Quinn averted his gaze and stared at the trees.

“You helped them?” Jared was incensed. “You’re supposed to be the voice of reason when they go off the rails.”

“They were going in with or without me,” Quinn fired back. “I thought it was best to be quick about it. I made them wear gloves.”

“Oh, well, you made them wear gloves.” Jared threw up his hands. “There’s no way I can do what you want out here, Harper. I don’t have any pull in Grosse Pointe.”

“Those kids died here,” Harper argued. “I’m betting they were buried in the yard. Can’t you get one of those ground-penetrating radar things just to check?”

“Can I get a very expensive piece of equipment that I don’t have access to and assign it to a city where I have no jurisdiction?” Jared demanded. “No, I cannot.”

“I might be able to pull it off,” Nick offered out of nowhere.

“Where are the kids?” Quinn asked. “Who is watching them?”

“Shawn showed up, and Eric and Molly are there,” Paul replied. “They’re fine. When Jared arrived and we heard him on the phone, we figured it was best we join you. Just in case.”

“And the kids wore you out,” Quinn surmised.

Paul’s smile was soft. “Yes, well, that was also a factor. They have a lot of energy.”

“We’re used to Lana and Kai,” Nick explained. “They’re much calmer than the others.”

“I’m pretty sure there’s an insult buried in there,” Zander muttered. “My children are absolute delights.”

“I would never say otherwise,” Nick assured him. “We’re just not used to it.”

“Uh-huh.” Zander’s eyes were narrow slits of mistrust. “I think you’re saying my kids are annoying.”

“Oh, let it go.” Harper lightly slapped Zander’s arm. “All kids are annoying at some point or other. That includes the ghost kids we just had a very long conversation with.” She turned to face her husband, hands planted firmly on her hips. “They died here, Jared. We can’t just ignore that.”

“That doesn’t change the fact that I don’t have jurisdiction outside of Whisper Cove,” Jared argued. “My hands are tied, Harper. I can’t do anything.”

“As I said earlier, I believe I can,” Nick interjected. It was obvious he was worried a fight would break out.

“How do you think you’re going to magically get an excavation team in here?” Jared demanded.

Nick pointed toward the sign in the middle of the road. It read Graham Excavations. “Miles Graham is an old friend. He owns the company. I have access to a machine through our company. It’s new, and we’ve been looking for a reason to test it. If I tell him our suspicions, he’ll come in with his equipment and allow us to bring ours. We can work together.”

“Just like that?” Jared was understandably dubious.

“You would be surprised what money can get you,” Nick replied. “I’m certain I can bring him around to our way of thinking.
