JACK HAD HIS EYES ON HIS PHONE SCREEN and was reading emails when he and Kevin swung into the medical examiner’s office. He was so distracted that he didn’t realize he was about to run into another police officer until it was almost too late.

“I’m sorry,” Jack said automatically, stopping quickly. “I wasn’t paying attention. That’s on me.”

“It’s a good thing I’m prone to forgiving you, huh?” Nick said on a grin, eyes twinkling. “You should pay more attention to walking instead of reading though. You don’t want to trip.”

Jack made a face when he realized who he’d almost collided with. “Well, if I knew it was you, I wouldn’t have bothered apologizing.”

The men exchanged grins.

“Not that I’m not happy to see you, but what are you doing here?” Jack asked as Kevin continued toward the front desk.

“We have a body,” Nick replied. He turned serious now. “The overnight patrol found it. It was a fluke really. Their headlights bounced off something that glinted in the ditch on the west side of town. They stopped to check it out, thinking it might be a dog or something, and they found her. I was going to call you.”

“You were going to call me?” Jack was understandably confused. “Why?”

“Because we already identified her.”

“See, your tone makes me think this isn’t going to be good.” Jack steeled himself. “Who is it?”

“Rose Horton.”

Jack let loose a sigh. He wasn’t really surprised. Sure, part of him was hopeful the woman was still alive, but it didn’t make sense for her to be the killer. The dagger threw everything off. “How did she die?”

“She was stabbed in the back.”

Jack’s eyebrows winged up. “Another dagger?”

Nick held out his hands. “There was no weapon on the scene … and she’s been dead for a good seventy-two hours now.”

Jack did the math in his head. “So, she could’ve been stabbed with the same dagger as Silas, and they would’ve been close to one another in timing.”

“That was my thinking,” Nick agreed. “The medical examiner is testing your weapon against my victim. Nothing came up in the toxicology report for Silas. He told me. He’s running one on Rose too, but I’m guessing that she died of the stab wound.”

“So, someone is out there,” Jack mused. “Someone killed Rose, dropped her in a Blackstone Bay ditch, and then came to Shadow Lake, led Silas into the woods, and killed him there. That’s quite the feat.”

“We don’t know that Rose was killed first,” Nick cautioned. “The medical examiner is trying to pin it down. Even if she were though, we don’t know when she was dumped in the ditch. It could’ve been after.”

“Right.” Jack let loose a heavy sigh. “Well, crap.”

“Yup.” Nick bobbed his head. “It seems we’re now working on the same case.”

“And the fantastic foursome is out in the woods looking for leads. I think we need to set up a group lunch.”

“I can call Maddie,” Nick offered. “Even if she’s not getting service where she is, she’ll get the message sooner rather than later.
