I watched Kenna and Mom go upstairs. Mom had mentioned she wanted to see the mark on Kenna for herself. She also told me that she’d had no luck gaining any information from the Scrolls about our situation, and that she would do her best to research the topic on her own. Guess we would have to just stick it out until a solution could be found, but then what? I hadn’t put much thought into what to do with her once this was all over. Would I be able to let her run free? Return her to the Sanctuary? Or would it be kinder to end her life?

Delilah’s rising to leave the room interrupted my thoughts.

“Where are you going?” I said, calling after her.

“Bathroom!” Her voice bounced off the walls as she turned the corner and walked down the passage.

Now alone, I pulled the crumpled piece of paper from my pocket and read over the words, trying to decide whether or not to meet the witch. For all I knew, she could be leading me into a trap. I still had many enemies in New Orleans that would pay a pretty penny for my head. As much as I didn’t want to follow false leads, something about this woman told me that she knew a lot more about what was going on than she had been willing to speak about earlier.

I looked at the time. I had only a few minutes to make my decision. Nobody else was around, and no doubt Kenna and Mom would be busy for a while. Haden wasn’t anywhere to be seen and Delilah went to the bathroom. Nobody would see me slip out if I left now.

I left the house determined to be there and back as soon as possible. If Josephine had something important to tell me—whether or not the information was relevant to what I was going through—I just couldn’t afford to leave any stone unturned, especially if it had anything to do with the people that killed Tara.

The somewhat busy streets had musical melodies haunting the cool night air, a subtle warning about the creatures that roam the alleyways of New Orleans after dark. I thought back to how afraid Josephine seemed when she saw the picture of me and Tara. The more I thought about our interaction, the more obvious it seemed. She was hiding something—and that something must have everything to do with Tara. She said I was attracting too much attention, but whose? Perhaps she was crazy. Although, once she said that, I couldn’t help but feel that someone was listening to our conversation.

I made my way down the street toward Josephine’s World of Wonders. I decided to look around her shop before meeting her, just to make sure there was nothing to imply that our meeting was a trap.

The closer I got, the smell of burning wood grew stronger. Upon seeing clouds of black smoke billowing toward the night sky, I ran to where a curious crowd of people had gathered.
