Chapter Twenty-Two

Kiden summoned his force spell.

He had spent every night since leaving his family tinkering with various settings and testing the new pieces. It took a while, and it wasn’t perfect, but he found settings that suited him.

The tip of his wand emanated a nearly invisible blade, almost the length of his wakizashi, the spell shaped by the compressor. It wasn’t sharp like a normal blade. That would require a compressor more specifically tailored for Kiden’s means. For now, it would do.

He slashed three times at the tree spirits, cutting through three of the smallest that piled on the guard who was trying to bat them away with his hands. The spirits fizzled back into nothing, essentially dead.

Kiden helped the guard up and had him lean against the nearby cart. “Use your sword as a cane. Get the Hells out of here!”

The guard stared at him for a second but turned and hobbled away.

Kiden was left to face a tree spirit the size of a small sapling. It bounded toward him on twined roots that looked like spider legs.

The spirit lashed at Kiden with its little branches. Its movements were quick and unpredictable. The scent of pine lingered in the air, informing Kiden of what type of tree it was a part of.

Kiden jumped away from the attacks, creating distance. The branches whipped from unconventional directions. It was best to avoid them completely than try to dodge, weave, or parry. Besides, his spell had run its course.

The fake blunt blade made of force only lasted for five seconds. Kiden had been able to program the alternators to have a cooldown of five seconds. So, five seconds with the blade, five seconds off. But five seconds was a long time in a fight.

The little tree spirit was about as tall as Kiden’s knee. A few days ago, it would have reached up to nearly his hip. He had grown a full head taller since reaching the second stage of power. It technically wasn’t a second circle, but he was definitely more powerful than he had been in either life.

However, the new height and strength weren’t a blessing. Kiden hadn’t been completely used to the new body. All the martial techniques he learned in Gracia were meant for his small, Iminese body. With this new one, his timing and movements were off. Which was why the sapling’s branch was able to whip across his upper arm, stinging him.

He pivoted and lunged away, trying to create more distance.

The tree spirit chased after him. Even though it didn’t have a face, it looked angry.

Its movements were erratic and forceful. There were several dozen other spirits of similar size attacking the guards who clearly did not know what to do. Spirits were immaterial and physical force would obviously not work. Did they not have a mage with them? This looked like a wealthy merchant group, so he was surprised they didn’t hire a mage.

Kiden’s alternator clicked, and he summoned his spell again. The blade met one of the sapling’s branches, slicing it.
