Maris
âMy father gave me my grandfatherâs cross for graduation with the understanding I would leave it to Maris should something happen to me. âYour grandfather believed in two things, Jed. Family and faith,â my father told me. Tonight, I did something. I broke my fatherâs trust because someone else needs those things more. I just hope he forgives me.â - From the journals of Jedidiah Smith.
âHe gave you Jedâs cross?â Kara gasps.
I lift the chain out of my shirt and show it to her. Itâs a few days after we had dinner at my house, and I havenât heard a word from Nick, but I know heâs still in Juneau. Heâs been training the fighter he came here to work with. I figure itâs only a matter of time until he comes by to tell me heâs heading back to Albuquerque, but Iâm finally at peace with my relationship with him. No, thatâs a lie, but what am I supposed to do? Iâm finally starting to build a life here, and heâs made a successful one there. âThere are things I need to share with you. Iâm terrified of what youâre going to say.â
Karaâs quiet. When she speaks, her words freeze my blood. âAfter I returned from Juneau, I received a letter from Deanâs lawyer. In the package, there was a posthumous message from Jed. He told me everything, Marisâincluding the fact you didnât remember.â
âOh, God. Kara. Iâm so sorry. I broke your trust. How can you ever forgive me?â
âWhat I want to know is how on earth could you think I would hold something like that against you?â
Thereâs silence on both ends of the line until I whisper, âExcuse me?â
âYou were strung out on pain meds from just having surgery. You had just been told you couldnât ever have children and somehow, somehow managed to stay on the phone with me while I gave birth to your godchild. You didnât bow or break until after you knew I made it through. And still youâre worried about me? What did that do to you?â By the end sheâs yelling and crying.
âHeld that in a while, did you?â I joke through my tears.
âDamn you, Maris, this isnât funny. If I thought for a moment it would have hurt you the way it did, I never would have asked Dean to make that call.â
âAnd I would have been devastated even more if you hadnât. Hearing Kevin cry for the first time is one of the most cherished memories I have. It was as if I was in that room with you, helping push that baby out. I may never have the physical experience, but because of you I have the emotional one.â And as I say the words, I know itâs the truth.
âYouâre going to be an amazing mother, Maris.â Kara sniffles.
Just as Iâm feeling the glow of her words trickle over me, she throws a bucket of water over me. âBy the way, Jennings wants you to know that he loves you.
