THE FETCH

The force fetch command is the foundation for all future training steps. It is one of the most challenging steps for the trainer and the dog. When you start this step, you will undoubtedly see the pup try every escape behavior imaginable, from getting out of the sit position to trying to turn his head every way except in the direction of the bumper. Your patience will be put to the test, but it is vital that you remain calm. You will need the following equipment: a bumper (plastic or canvas), a choke chain, a dummy collar, and a leash.

Put the dummy collar on the pup and use a choke chain that goes just above it. The choke chain needs to stay above the flat collar without sliding below the flat collar. With the pup at heel, take the flap of his ear and hold it in between your thumb and index finger. Gently pull the ear toward the bumper as you give the command “fetch.” If your pup refuses to open his mouth, go back to the “hold” command by applying pressure on his mouth. Or push the bumper against his teeth while pulling on his ear and forcing your thumb into his mouth. Once the bumper is in his mouth, tap him under the chin and reinforce the “hold” command. At this early stage, keep pressure to a minimum. The beginning of this step will be the hardest. As soon as the pup understands that the pressure on his ear stops when he complies to the “fetch” command, the sooner the step becomes easier. This will take several repetitions.
