Constriction and Vacuum Devices
In contrast to mechanical devices, cock rings and vacuum devices work hydraulically. They try to draw more blood into the penis or prevent blood in the penis from leaving. Cock rings go around the base of the penis as well as the scrotum and restrict normal blood flow from leaving the penis. Cock rings come in several basic styles: solid hard (metal or rubber) bands, elastic bands, and leather with snaps or Velcro.
As with vacuum devices, cock rings can create permanent penis damage if erections are maintained for several hours (priapism). Leather cock rings with fasteners are safer since they can be removed at will. Some men have had to have the rings cut off in order to save their penises. Remember, the man places his penis and his testicles inside the cock ring before he gets an erection. That means he’s got to have a fairly flaccid penis before he can get it off—unless he can unfasten it. That’s the advantage of Velcro or snap closures.
Vacuum pumps go cock rings one better, by first drawing blood into the penis before an elastic band is placed around the base of it. The man inserts his penis into a hard plastic sleeve, with a hand- or battery-operated pump on the end. By pumping, the man creates a vacuum in the sleeve, which draws blood into his penis and produces an erection. He then rolls a band, sitting on the mouth of the sleeve, down to the base of his penis before withdrawing it from the device. The restricting band keeps his penis engorged and erect.
Vacuum devices have been around for years, but they recently received FDA approval as a legitimate erection aid. Clinical studies show that 60 to 80 percent of men get erections with these devices. Many men drop out due to pain, numbness, bruising of the penis, and problems with ejaculation. Don’t forget, vacuum devices create a condition that can permanently damage a penis if the band is left on for several hours.
If you’re wondering how someone could not take care of that, meet Matt. Matt’s idea of a good time was to take lots of drugs, pump up with a vacuum device, and “party hard” at group sex gatherings. One time, Matt passed out in a chemical stupor and awoke with a grossly enlarged penis. He had his metal cock ring cut off in the emergency room of the local hospital.
Similar things happen more than you imagine. Emergency room physicians trade stories of men coming in because their penis “happened” to get stuck in the vacuum cleaner hose while doing housework in the nude. And with vacuum pump advertisements promising prodigious penis size, some men tend to overdo things. However, FDA-approved vacuum devices are a legitimate option for erection problems.
