Chapter Eight
Bridgetâs talk with their parents went about as well as Cassie had guessed it would. That was to say, there was a fair bit of shouting, mostly from Bridgetâs side, and a fair bit of tears, mostly from her motherâs side. Her dad, after confirming that heâd be getting the money he had spent on the semester back, had simply told Bridget that he wasnât going to fork the money over again until she gave him a reason to believe she was going to stick with college that time around, and told her if she wanted to look into trade schools, heâd be happy to help her.
Cassie got dragged into the discussion as well, but her part was mostly assuring her parents that sheâd make sure Bridget had a roof over her head and food on her plate until she found a way to support herself. The four of them made tentative plans to see each other in a couple of weeks, and then, finally, the conversation was over.
âThat didnât go too badly,â Bridget said, sounding not quite convinced.
âYou didnât have to freak out at Mom,â Cassie retorted. âSheâs just worried about you. We all are.â
âWhy canât she be more like Dad though? He never gets upset over anything.â
âHe gets upset over plenty,â Cassie said, tossing some of her sisterâs clothes to the other end of the couch so she could sit down. âRemember that time when you were thirteen, and you left the riding lawnmower running in the garage with the garage door shut?â
âOh, my goodness, I thought he was going to ground me for the rest of my life,â Bridget said with a shudder. âOkay, so he gets mad, but only about the important things.â
âRight, but from Momâs point of view, college is one of those important things. College is very important to her; you know that. She and Dad have always had different views on that. He would have been fine with either of us going to a trade school or even refusing further education altogether as long as we could make a good living at whatever we were doing. To him, degrees and certificates are all just a step on the way to having a good life. To Mom, they have importance on their own.â
âUgh, why do you have to be so grown-up about everything?â Bridget asked with a groan, flinging herself down on the floor in front of the coffee table.
Cassie tossed a shirt at her. âWeâve all got to grow up sometime, Bridget. Considering that you decided to jump into adulthood feet first without even the training wheels that college is meant to provide, youâd better think about doing the same yourself, sooner rather than later.â
The rest of the evening wasnât without any disagreements, but that was pretty much par for the course whenever Cassie was with her sister. All in all, it was a surprisingly pleasant day. Cassie helped her sister sort through her clothes and figure out what she wanted to
