I didn’t know any better so that was the only booklet that I studied. I didn’t know at that time that there were review courses you could pay money and go for a week or two. I went and took the test based on that little booklet. (BG, 310–314)

He took the test in Odessa, Texas. There were over 200 people taking the test and Benito is sure they were all White except him. He scored a 20 on a scale of 1–50. The mean score for Hispanics that year was 22. He applied to four law schools (Texas Tech, University of Houston, The University of Texas at Austin, and St. Mary’s) and was rejected by all of them.

Benito was disappointed and discouraged. He forgot about law school and considered teaching and coaching. He was offered a teaching position at the high school in his hometown, but opted to go back to Sul Ross to work on a master’s in counseling. Then he got a call from the executive director of the CLEO program. He had received a letter inviting him to participate in the CLEO program, but threw it away when he was not accepted to any school. Benito thought it was fate.
