Neither of the paramedics knew who won the race to sleep. Their sleep came quickly but left almost as fast. The lights and tones again came on in unison, "Rescue 12 respond to a pediatric with fever at 9822 Gibsonton Drive."

David jumped up from the bunk by reflex to the sounds. His eyes began to focus after he was about halfway down the hall. His right shoulder hit the comer wall as he turned to walk outside to the truck. He rubbed his burning red eyes. The button at the top of his shirt refused to button because his hand refused to follow any commands from his hazy brain.

"Rescue 12 responding," Jonathan held the microphone and stared at the garage door as it opened. These few seconds allowed his body to dump just enough adrenaline in his system to provide him the hope that he would be safe to drive.

Joey watched as the two men left. He slipped out of the side door into the night. He was angry yet had the information to complete his task. He knew the names and addresses of these paramedics from their red log book. Angry, and determined, he left.

Not a word was spoken by the two paramedics. Maybe, they would get lucky twice. Maybe, the call would be canceled. The unit sped down the empty road, the red lights again reflecting off the morning fog.

A twenty-five-year-old white woman met them at the door then walked barefoot over to the kitchen table and sat down. She motioned for them to go to the back bedroom. The table was covered with dirty dishes, and dirty clothes were piled up high against the small dining room wall. She sat there, drinking her coffee, obviously drowsy and also intoxicated. David stopped at the table, “What’s going on? Where is the child with the fever?” She just motioned to the back room and said nothing to David as he continued down the hall to find the reason for the call.

David looked around the house for any further clues to what he might find for a patient and for any dangers as he walked down the hallway to the back bedroom. As he entered, he found a three-year-old boy sleeping in his bed. He walked over to the child and noticed no sign of distress. Jonathan placed his hand softly on the back of the child. The child did not awaken. The child's skin was slightly warm to touch. There was nothing else out of the ordinary.

David put the heavy boxes of his equipment down and walked back to the mother. Before
