Apartment above the Corner Pub

Wallace, ID

Saturday night

Twilight found all four members of the team sitting in silence around the darkened apartment. Jacob was watching the town square and monitoring security footage on his laptop. Jenkins and Harvey were hard at work on their own computers. Harvey was sifting through the lives and histories of Reid’s employees, searching for anyone who would have means and motive to yap about the simulation program.

“Constance LeRoy has a few DUI charges from her twenties,” he ventured into the silence. “Alcoholics aren’t known for their discretion after the first few drinks.”

“Any evidence of recent addiction?” Jenkins sat slumped in her chair, her eyes glazed as she reviewed the minutia of Reid’s contract with the DoD.

Harvey shook his head. “AA member for ten years straight.”

Jacob spoke from his lookout spot by the window. “Add her to the list anyway. We’ll track her down for an interview first thing in the morning, unless something better comes up.”

Val had been sprawled on the living room’s sagging corduroy couch. Now she stood, tossing her computer aside with an angry grunt. She’d spent the last six hours crawling into Hannah Stein’s boring life. No criminal connections. No connections to people with criminal connections. No history of any political, ideological, or theological radicalism. Indeed, the most subversive thing Miss Stein had ever done was play the role of Captain Hook in a community theater production of Peter Pan.

Jenkins and Harvey looked up, watching Val fidget her way around the room. Inside of her, Reginleif paced like a tiger in a cage. “It has been too long since we have sparred or stretched our wings,” the other woman complained. “All of this sitting in silence, staring at screens… It cannot be good for us. We require motion and action, Valkyrie.”

Val barked a laugh and asked under her breath, “Is that a royal we? Or do you actually mean both you and me?”

A hand fell on Val’s shoulder. She jumped and whirled. Her clenched fists were up and ready to fly before she recognized Jacob’s broad face. He stared down at her, the corners of his eyes crinkled with concern.

“Come on.” He turned her toward the apartment door, his grip on her shoulder gentle but unyielding. “Let’s get some fresh air.”
