Chapter 27: Roger

Today, Roger returned to Gayle’s diary, and read about the end of their all-too-brief relationship. She loved him. Oh, the words hit him and he had to put the diary down for a few moments. Bracing himself, he carried on. But love, she wrote, wasn’t enough. She needed a future, security, a place to call home. But it wasn’t something she could do on her own, not on a teacher’s salary, she needed a partner. And Roger, with his sedentary lifestyle, his lack of income and total lack of ambition was not the man with whom she could realise these dreams. He was fun, she wrote, knew how to make her laugh, and they connected. But it was all about the ‘now’ with Roger. She loved the way he cared for his brother but couldn’t imagine him as a father to her children. Being ‘a good laugh’ only took you so far in life, and Gayle wanted a whole lot more.

Roger closed the diary. It pained him to admit it but she was right. He knew that. He wasn’t proud of it but he’d always stayed in the same lane, living with his mother, looking after Colin, living from one week to the next. He did think of the future but found the prospect so frightening, he preferred to bury his head in the sand and hoped it’d go away. He couldn’t blame Gayle for wanting more. Looking back on it, he was amazed she put up with him for so long.

He flipped forward, skim-reading the entries after their split-up, dreading the moment he came across a new man in Gayle’s life. But it hadn't happened – she never met anyone new. Indeed, Roger’s cropped up a few times again, how she missed him, how she wondered how he was getting on and whether he’d found himself someone new. But no, he hadn't. Hadn't even looked at a woman while his head and heart were still too full of her. And now, now that she was gone, he doubted if he ever would.
