Yuko and Eve flew in silence as Yuko surveyed the ships caught in the trash. Half an hour later, they had located twenty-seven additional vessels that looked worth investigating. Eve transmitted the data in a high-speed burst to Takumi as the Pod sped across the deep blue waves toward Tokyo.

“Horst tells me you had an issue with the EIs earlier,” Yuko began as the Pod settled onto the desired heading.

“Teenagers.” Eve shrugged noncommittally.

“I can only imagine.” Yuko smirked.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Eve shot back.

“Oh, nothing,” Yuko answered innocently.

“Go ahead and say it. I know you’re thinking it, anyway.”

“I’m sure I have no idea what you mean, Eve.” Yuko turned away to hide the grin on her lips.

“I know I owe Akio—and you too, I suppose—an apology for some of my past actions.”

“Me, no. Akio, definitely.” Yuko laughed.

“I was a bit of a brat to him at times,” Eve admitted. “In my defense, he still had no excuse for risking your life with some of the missions he took you on.”

“I was never in any real danger except the time with Isamu,” Yuko replied. “When we went against the Clan in Miura was the only time I was ever afraid. If you hadn’t been there, I would have died.”

Eve nodded. “However, I was there. That was my point all along. It’s my job to protect you, and Akio taking you without me prevented that. That was the reason I was so mad at him. I can’t lose you.”

Yuko reached over and pulled Eve into a one-armed hug. “I love you too.”

Eve smiled and returned the hug. “I know you do. You and Akio are my family, and I would do anything to keep you safe. That’s why I allowed Abel to continue to behave in such a hostile manner with the Clan. It gives him an edge that I fear Akio will need as he continues to hunt them.”

“Akio is hurting and angry, but he hasn’t taken any unnecessary risks so far,” Yuko assured her.

“I know, but there’s always a first time, and without access to a working Pod-doc, I can’t heal him if he’s severely injured.” Eve sighed.

“Akio understands the risks,” Yuko told her. “Have faith in him. He’s been at this for centuries and is the most accomplished and deadly fighter on Earth. He won’t intentionally do anything to risk his life without good reason.”

“I know that,” Eve countered, “but I’ll feel better about it once I have the Pod-doc functional again. Besides that, I worry about Asai. If she’s attacked like Koda or even injured in an accident, I can’t save her.”

Yuko was silent as she considered Eve’s words before a look of resolve crossed her face. “I can do something to lower the risk.”

Eve studied the determination on Yuko’s face. “What’s that?”

“Give her my blood,” Yuko stated simply.

Eve’s eyes went wide and she asked, “Do you plan to turn her?”

Yuko shook her head. “No, not unless it’s necessary. I’ll put some of my blood in vials so it‘s readily available if she needs it.
