The Ducatiâs engine roared. Zack zipped between two cars with several inches to spare.
No time to stop for a red light. He accelerated through the intersection, missing an oncoming delivery van by mere feet. Hayli tightened her arms around his stomach.
So many times heâd imagined her clinging to him like that. Too bad the reality didnât exactly meet his expectations. Wind surely whipped past his face, but he couldnât feel it because heâd never quite gotten the hang of turning his power off to all parts of his body at once. Concentrating on his hands, eyes, ears, and oh yeah, not repelling Hayli off the back of the bike was a bit more important. More to the point, she embraced him in his fantasies because she actually wanted to be holding him, not just because his driving terrified her.
Still, if that was all he could get, heâd take it. He twisted the throttle further, and the Ducati shot ahead. She clutched even tighter and buried her head against his back.
He was officially an ass.
The weird thing was that, despite the fact heâd only ridden a motorcycle twice in his life, there wasnât any real danger. The bike was an extension of him. Inches or feet, he knew he wasnât going to get hit.
Of course, Hayli didnât know that. She was, rightly, terrified.
âSorry!â he shouted. âHave to get the package back to the Institute as quick as possible.â
Well, he did need to get the bomb to Monte, but saying that was his primary motivation at the moment was a huge whopper. Zack looked at the sky. If he kept telling lies like that one, lightning was going to strike. Not that it would hurt him, but with Hayli so close â¦
He should just tell her how he felt and get it over with. But she was his best friend, and he didnât want to risk that relationship. And she was dating his colleague. Not only a colleague but potentially a traitor.
Crap! If he dropped that little nugget on Hayli, sheâd be devastated. More importantly, she might not be able to hide that she knew. If Samuel discovered that his secret was out, he might kidnap her or hurt her. Or kill her.
Zack grimaced. And there was also the possibility Hayli would be more angry at him for being the messenger than at Samuel for being the bad guy. But she might be even madder at Zack for not telling her.
Talk about his own version of the Kobayashi Maru.
On the plus side, she probably wouldnât even believe him. Fan freaking tastic.
On the balance of it, telling her was a stupid idea. Better to enjoy reconnecting with her. He closed his eyes briefly, savoring the warmth of her body pressed against his, and all too soon, they arrived at the parking garage.
Zack dismounted and carefully picked up the duffel. âIâve got to deal with this right quick, but afterwards, want the grand tour of the place?â
She hesitated, and he frowned.
Taking her on a
