Chapter 7

“Ms. Ava Locke?” The rich, deep baritone of a man with a strange accent reached Ava’s ears. When she shifted her eyes, she saw the expensive loafers just outside her cell. She knew immediately that he was connected to Veritas.

Veritas might be capable of evil deeds, but they would never be caught wearing anything from the thrift store. The thought made Ava laugh inwardly.

When she pushed herself up from the cot, she grunted in pain as her wound made its presence known again.

“What do you people want?” she demanded.

The man pushed his glasses up his nose, his eyes widening behind them.

“How did you know?“ he began asking, and Ava motioned to his attire.

“It is quite difficult to miss. Tell me, does Veritas insist on dressing all their employees like this?” she asked, a sneer forming on her face.

The man stammered out some excuse that Ava didn’t bother paying attention to. Was this Julien’s way of communicating with her?

“Where’s Ellie?” Ava demanded.

“What happened to you?” he asked, looking at her bruised neck, concern on his delicate features.

Ava scoffed and said, “Ask your people. Now, where’s Ellie?”

The man looked around, eyes darting about in confusion before resting on Ava’s face. He didn’t know. He didn’t know about Ellie, and Ava wanted to crawl back into her creaky cot and fall asleep.

Without saying anything, the man pulled out his phone and tapped on it furiously before glancing at her neck once more. Then he fiddled with his glasses and tilted his head. “Are you talking about the girl?” he asked.

His voice echoed all around her otherwise empty cell, and Ava paused. She pressed up against the bars again, her face expectant.

“What does the girl look like?” she asked him.

The man brought his hand out and held it to his shoulder, “About this tall? Dark hair and some piercings?”

That was Ellie, Ava thought as she nodded her head. “Is she well?” she asked once more, her question a nicer way of asking, “Did Julien hurt her?”

The man paused to gather his thoughts, and Ava’s mind immediately thought of the worst possible outcome. It took him way too long to reply, “No, she looks well.”

And that was all that Ava had ever wanted. With a sigh, she lifted her head to face the man. It seemed as if he didn’t like being looked at much and even less making direct eye contact. But Ava didn’t care. She wanted to know why he was there, standing in front of her cell in the middle of the night.

“Why are you here then?” Ava asked.

The man pushed his glasses up again and began barking orders in a tone she hadn’t heard him use before. She gave him a look over and noticed his pressed suit, remembering the soft voice he had used to talk to her. It was completely different from how he was calling the same officers that had been tormenting her, ordering them to take her out of the cell so that he could talk to her properly.
