Chapter 18

Jason and Daniel had some time before they were due to meet Micah, so they decided to walk down the Marine Parade toward the pavilion that led to the pier. The pier stuck out into the estuary like an accusing finger, but it was a fine place to promenade, and several well-dressed couples strolled along, the ladies shielding their faces from the sun with lace-trimmed parasols. The sunlight sparkled on the water, and the sky was a cloudless blue, the day too lovely to spend indoors. A few bathing cabins had been wheeled into the water for those brave souls who were willing to risk a dip in the still-frigid water, and they were clearly visible in their caps and bathing costumes as they splashed around.

“We now know that Sybil Grant gave birth to a daughter in June of 1865. The child was taken away and placed with a foster family chosen by Judge Grant. Davina has just turned three, but what could she have to do with Sybil Grant’s murder?” Daniel mused as they strolled along. “If we are to assume that Judge Grant had exacted a promise from his sister never to see the child or have contact with the family, then this is just a bit of unfortunate family history.”

“I’m afraid I don’t see a connection either,” Jason said. “We don’t even know if the child is still alive. There are so many illnesses than can carry a child off before they are even out of babyhood.”

“I’m glad we confirmed your suspicions that Sybil Grant had indeed given birth, but unless she was somehow in contact with her daughter, I fear this is a dead end. Whatever led to Sybil Grant’s death was something that must have occurred recently.”

Jason peered toward the pier. Two boys stood at the very end and appeared to be talking earnestly. “Is that Micah?” Jason asked.

Daniel squinted but couldn’t be sure. He did think one of the boys had bright red hair peeking out from beneath his cap. “I can’t tell from this distance. It could be.”

“Looks like he made a friend,” Jason observed. “I have no idea what I’m going to do to keep him occupied all summer. I don’t want him roaming the streets of London on his own.”

“He’s too old for childish pursuits and too young to do anything that might be considered useful,” Daniel said. “I don’t suppose you’ll have that problem for much longer. He’s certainly matured this past year.”

“Yes, he has,” Jason replied with a sigh. “I only hope he doesn’t run off to Boston before he has a chance to attend university. It would be a terrible shame if he were to forgo an education.”

Daniel smiled. “Micah is a clever lad, but I don’t need to tell you that. You already know. I doubt he’ll throw his future away, not when he knows firsthand how the other half lives.”

“People make irrational choices when their emotions are involved,” Jason said. “If they didn’t, you’d be out of a job.
