Chapter 12

We entered the Orange Pumpkin Cafe, and I spent a couple of minutes perusing the delicious treats behind the glass case as we waited in line to speak to the server.

“What can I get you?” a round-faced woman with a bright smile said. “We’ve got Cherry Bakewell as the special today if you’re looking for something sweet.”

“Actually, we’re not here for—”

“Yes. We’ll have that whole Cherry Bakewell, half a dozen chocolate chip brownies, six pecan caramel cookies, and some of that strawberry tart.” Bandit glanced at me. “What are you going to have?”

I shook my head. “I’ll take a coffee to go.”

“Right you are.” The woman began piling up Bandit’s order.

“I wonder if you could help me with something,” I said. “Do you remember a guy with ginger hair and red eyes who came in here and ordered soup two nights ago?”

She glanced up and smiled. “That poor guy is hard to forget. He spilled his food all down his shirt. He’d ordered minestrone soup to take out, along with a bag of cheese and bacon rolls and a sweet flan. He was trying to balance it all when someone walked into him. The soup tipped down his front. I felt so sorry for him. He couldn’t have been more apologetic, though. I gave him another soup on the house, but I think his shirt was ruined.”

That ruled Brendan out of the equation in this investigation. He’d been with Saul, then in here to get food during the time of Herbert’s murder. I didn’t have him as a key suspect, anyway. He seemed too nervy to go up against a demon.

I grudgingly paid for Bandit’s enormous food order and was turning to leave the cafe when Jeremiah, Virginia, and several other people I didn’t recognize walked in.

“You get eating,” I said to Bandit as I passed her the bag of food. “That’s just the man I want to see.”

I hurried to the table Jeremiah was settling at. “Hello again, Virginia.”

She looked up and half-smiled. “Hi, Tempest. How are things going with the investigation?”

“We’re getting there,” I said. “I wouldn’t mind talking to you, Jeremiah. I was hoping to see you at the lecture.”

He glanced at Virginia, and she nodded. “Of course. I’ve heard that you spoke to Virginia about what happened to Herbert. Would you like to join us?”

I shook my head. “This will only take a couple of minutes. Tell me how you knew Herbert,”

“He started out as my mentor. I went to university later in life and was fortunate enough to have him as a tutor. We became friends. When he started touring to promote his work, he asked me to join him. It was a privilege to work alongside him. It’s such a shame he’s gone.”

Virginia patted his hand. “We all feel his absence.”

Jeremiah smiled at her. “I always knew he was vulnerable because of his work.”

“The death threats, you mean?” I said.

“Demons hated his hunt for a cure,” Jeremiah said. “I was so worried for my friend.
