Chapter Nine
WE STARTED THE EVENING with a little security scan surrounding Lila Rose’s property. Gertie took the street, watching for any strange cars, while Ida Belle and I sat in Lila Rose’s airboat checking out any strange boats cruising by. The sun had set about a half hour ago, and so far nothing appeared unusual. Especially the mosquitoes. I slapped at one as it landed on my skin.
“Why don't you just use some bug spray?” Ida Belle asked.
“Because I don't want to smell as disgusting as you’re smelling. And that's saying something, since the predominant smell is the stench of the swamp.”
“You still haven't gotten used to eau de Sinful?”
“No, that'll probably take another couple years.”
Ida Belle smiled. “Does that mean you're thinking of staying put?”
“Um, that was a figure of speech.”
Her next question took me aback. “So when did you decide to quit the CIA?”
I hoped the look on my face didn't give me away, but the look on her face told me it did. I was distracted by a giant mosquito that hovered over her arm before turning abruptly and landing on mine. I slapped at it, but it was too quick and flew away.
“When you wear bug spray, I get more bites. I'm blaming this all on you.”
“You’re imagining things.” She smiled. “When were you going to tell us?”
“I didn't want to get your hopes up, in case, you know, anything goes wrong. I mean, at least I think your hopes would be up. You would want me to stay, wouldn't you?”
“There's one on your neck.”
I took my right hand and swatted at my neck.
“Left side.”
I slapped at the left side of my neck. Got it.
“If living in Sinful would make you happy, then, yes, of course I'd want you to stay here. It would make you happy, wouldn’t it?”
“I think it might agree with me.”
She nodded. I could tell she was stifling a laugh.
“What's so funny?”
“I was just thinking that Gertie would come in handy right about now. She always has a way of saying what we’re really feeling.”
“And what would she say?”
“For starters, she’d probably start crying. Then she’d say something like, ‘Damn straight. We love you.’ And then I’d say, ‘What she said.’”
“Yeah,” I nodded. “What she said.”
I slapped at another mosquito. This had been a heartfelt discussion, considering we were two women who’d rather sit through an opera than express our true feelings. And we hated opera.
“Just don't tell Gertie, okay? I have to know things are going to be good between Carter and me before I start making plans to stay.”
“Understood.” Ida Belle flicked her head. “Incoming.”
We'd only seen a couple of boats since we’d been out here. Both times, the boaters just waved as they drove by. But this one shut off the boat’s lights and cut the engine a distance upstream. Our lights were off, and we were well hidden behind some brush, but we still had a good view of the other boat.
“Seems suspicious,” Ida Belle whispered.
We pulled our handguns from inside our waistbands.
