The essence of convivial ways of life, communities and work is extremely simple: care for other human beings, friendship with substance and pleasure in the simple and vitally nourishing things that feed life (as the ancient Chinese knew24). Illich understood the liberatory force of conviviality and that the gains can outweigh the sacrifice – here, then, is what has to be developed and made a central plank of metrofitting.
