Craig released the movie guide and walked toward the couch. The news anchor continued:

But as sources at our station are learning, there may be more ominous overtones to this particular killing. We go now to David Jordan, who is live on the South Side near Cicero. David?

The newscast shifted to a field reporter bundled in a coat, standing just outside the same building Craig and Danny had been in the previous evening.

That’s right, Mary. Sources have told us that there were representatives from the eleventh precinct here for several hours before the Forensic Services division was called. Speculation is that the killing could have something to do with the recent messages the police have been receiving from an unknown individual.

David, do your sources believe that the killer could be the same person who has been corresponding with the police?

No one will say just that, Mary. They also won’t confirm that there was a civilian at the crime scene along with the first responders, well before the arrival of the crime scene unit. Theories have circulated this afternoon about whether this individual might have been an expert who deals with the occult or ritual killings.

Whoa, David. This is definitely a new turn in this case. Have you been able to learn who was helping them at the scene last night, and whether or not this killing could be related to the earlier messages?

Not yet, Mary. But the precinct has a news conference scheduled in the morning to provide an update. If there is any connection to the messages, or if the police believe that a threat exists to the community, the public has a right to know. And we’ll be there to ask the tough questions . . .
