“Nurse Richards, there’s a delivery up front for you,” Trina, one of our CNAs, said peeking her head into the room where I’d been checking in with a patient who was waiting to be transported to x-ray to see just how badly he’d fractured his foot after trying to pull a skateboard trick. He had me held hostage in his room showing me the time lapsed video of him attempting the trick more than twenty times before finally landing it and then promptly losing his footing and injuring himself. No bullshit, the trick did look cool, but he’d be off that board for quite some time during his recovery period.

“Thanks, Trina. I’ll be out in just a sec. Just tell the delivery guy to leave it at the desk.”

“He insisted that you come collect it yourself,” she replied.

I patted Curtis – the patient – on his shoulder, reiterating that someone would be taking him to x-ray soon before going out to collect whatever was waiting for me up front. I’d just cleared the desk when my eyes widened in surprise at who was standing there. I walked over to him slowly, trying to fight the big grin that wanted to break across my face at seeing his face.

“I know you don’t like surprises, but I figured I’d take my chances at getting cussed out because I wanted to see you. Badly.”

I shook my head as the grin took over my face and I moved closer to Lewis, draping my arms over his shoulders and tiptoeing up for a hug. His arms came up instantly, encircling my waist as I melted into his embrace.

“Hey, babe.”

The flutters that were set off in my stomach from those two little words had Veronica sounding off in my brain immediately, Whew, bitch you are DOA. Done for. This man got you gone. She wasn’t completely wrong. He did have me completely gone. A feeling I couldn’t have predicted and I was powerless to even try to combat at this point. Since that night when I’d let him come over to my place, we’d had perfect attendance in each other’s lives—trading time spent together between our places when we weren’t occupied with work or friends or whatever. Him just popping up at my job shoulda had me upset considering that we’d definitely spent some quality time together this morning before I came in. I also typically didn’t like any on my personal business being discussed on my job, which I knew – from the stares we’d garnered as we stood embracing – would be an inevitability.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

“Had a meeting nearby and a little voice inside of me said, say bruh why don’t you go and see about your girl, so I followed its advice.”

I shook my head, giggling at his silliness.

“Can you spare a lil bit of time for me?”

“She can,” Trina piped up, which made me turn around and ice grill her.

Sis was a little too tuned into my convo.

“My bad, girl,” she said with a sheepish little grin.
