Chapter Seven
âShe could be lying,â I said to Corbin, once we left the underground clubhouse. âMaybe she confessed to taking the snowmobile to get us off her tracks.â
Corbin shook his head. âSheâs not lying.â
I wasnât sure how he could sound so certain, but didnât press the issue. âWhat, um ⦠is she?â I asked, still chilled from the encounterâliterally and figuratively.
âSheâs a frost harpy,â Corbin replied, his eyes scanning the streets. âShe keeps her wings to herself, for the most part, but sheâs got âem,â Corbin continued.
âWow. I didnât even know that was a thing â¦â
What other secrets were lurking in the underground of the otherwise happy holiday town?
I wasnât sure I really wanted to know the answer to that question.
Pocketing my hands, I rocked onto the balls of my feet and back to my heels. âWe could go to Wet Your Wassail and see if anyone saw him leave after Everly left,â I suggested, giving the prince a wary look. âAny idea where he might have gone, or who he would have called, if he was snowmobile-less?â
Corbin shook his head. âHe could have called the palace, but if he had, there would be a record of it.â
Bobbing back to my toes again, a new thought struck me. Rocking back, I frowned. âYou know whatâs weird â¦â
Corbin looked at me.
âYou said he has a bodyguard, sometimes two, everywhere he goes.â
âWhen he doesnât send them away,â Corbin muttered, his expression dark. âHe thinks nothing bad can happen in a town like this.â
âRight, but what about the night outside the restaurant, when Charlaineâs ice troll found them? They werenât in Holiday Haven. They were at the North Pole. So, shouldnât one of the guards have been there to stop it?â
âThey should have,â Corbin said, though I could see the wheels in his mind start turning again. âSounds like my father got one thing right, in dismissing Crane.â
âDo you think he might be able to answer some of these questions? He was still on the job last night. He must know something about what happened.â
âItâs just a matter of tracking him down. Heâll have already been removed from his residence at the castle by now. Iâll need to make some phone calls.â Corbin pointed his chin down the street, back the way weâd come. âLetâs get out of the cold. Iâll call and see if I can find Crane. Heâs Jackâs main guard ⦠or, at least, he was.â
Pausing on the sidewalk, he gestured up at the sign hanging above the Candy Cane Café. âI donât know about you, but I could use a refill.â
With a small smile, I nodded and followed him inside. It was one of my favorite places in Holiday Haven, second only to the Corner Bookstore. The cozy shop was always warm and smelled of chocolate. Mismatched, overstuffed chairs and low coffee tables dotted the room, making it feel more like someoneâs grandmotherâs living room than a cold, cookie-cutter coffeehouse. A fireplace sat on one end, with bookshelves on either side, full of knickknacks and secondhand paperbacks that anyone could borrow.
