Surprises

“I can’t believe you made so much progress in just one day,” Lesti looked at me, a mixture of pride and surprise on her face. It was the next morning, and we were meeting in Lani’s room again. We originally hadn’t planned to meet until the day after next. However, I was super excited about my discovery and wanted to let Lani know what I had found.

After dropping the bracelet off in the room the day before, I spent the afternoon wandering the campus and practicing my new ability. I still had a long way to go, but I was slowly starting to get the hang of it. My range was still pretty short, so I could only sense magical energy in the area near me. However, I was starting to be able to tell people apart just by the way magic flowed through their bodies.

For example, Aurelia had an incredible concentration of magic in her hands for some reason. It made her stand out like a sore thumb. Lesti, on the other hand, was a bit harder. The flow of her magical energy was weaker than most of the other students, but apart from that, it was pretty standard. I had also run across Alexander yesterday after class while I was waiting for Lesti. He was even more unique than Aurelia. The flow of his magic was like a raging river that poured straight out of his body.

“Well, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without Aurelia’s help,” I let out an unintentional purr as I remembered the sensation of her scratching behind my ears. That earned me a nasty glare from Lesti. It seemed like she might actually be getting a little jealous of Aurelia when it came to this.

“I’m surprised too. I wonder if that thing with her hands is some secret skill of her clan,” Lesti stopped glaring at me and furrowed her brow in thought, “Her advice was really accurate too. Do you think she’s suspicious about those devices?”

“It’s possible. She did seem rather relieved when I was able to sense the energy in the bracelet again,” I closed my eyes, thinking back to Aurelia’s reactions during our conversation, “She didn’t seem that surprised when I told her about the bracelet either. You hadn’t already told her about it, right?”

Lesti shook her head, “Nope. I just asked her questions about her clan and the forest she grew up in. She tried to hide it, but I could tell me talking about it was upsetting her, so I backed off for the time being.”

“I wonder if there is some connection there then,” I flicked my tail about in agitation as I tried to find the missing pieces of the puzzle, “As much as Aurelia seems to like animals, I can’t imagine her willingly playing along with a scheme like this.”

“This may work out in our favor then, don’t you think?” Lani stood up from her spot on the bed and started for the door, “If
