Growth and Relationships

“N-now, everyone pay attention, please. I’d like to get started so that we have a chance to get through everyone.”

Lani desperately tried to focus the class. Today, they would be practicing for the practical exams that were fast approaching. That meant that there wouldn’t be any lectures. Instead, they would be practicing their spells on the training grounds.

The combination of being outside and getting to practice using their spells meant that the students were full of energy. That, of course, included Lesti. I had given her permission to use the new technique we had been practicing for the last week, so she was eager to get the show underway.

“A-alright, for today’s practice, I’d like to see everyone use the Fireball spell,” Lani finally got the class under control, “We’ll be going three at a time. Would anyone like to volunteer to go first?”

“I’d like to go first!” Lesti’s hand shot up like a firework.

“O-okay. That’s one person. Who else?”

A nervous look appeared on Lani’s face. It was understandable. Every time Lesti was involved, trouble seemed to follow shortly after. However, there was no way she could refuse when she was volunteering so eagerly.

After that, another handful of students volunteered. Lani picked two students that were somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of skill. I wonder if she did that to try and keep Lesti from embarrassing herself. Well, unfortunately, that’s just going to make the difference even more startling.

Lesti and the two other students took their places. Across the training ground, three sturdy looking wooden dummies had been placed in the ground. Other than those dummies, the training ground was just an empty field. Any trees were a safe distance away in order to avoid collateral damage.

Lesti stood across from the dummy on the far left while the other students took the center and right dummies, respectively. They were each about thirty feet from their target. Lani moved to a position closer to the dummies and motioned for the students to begin.

At her signal, each of the students began their chants for Fireball, and I began to see the magic take shape around the other two students. However, there wasn’t any activity around Lesti. No magic coiled around her, nor did any fire begin to form.

Lani looked on with a worried expression on her face as the incantations neared their end. The girl on the right finished her incantation first. A moderately sized fireball formed in front of her. “Fireball!” At her shout, the spell raced forward. However, her aim was slightly off, and the ball of flame clipped the side of the target before dissipating.

The boy in the middle was the next to finish. Unlike the girl, his fireball moved at a far slower speed. The ball of fire hit the target square on. However, it wasn’t hot enough to do anything more than scorch the surface of the hard, wooden dummy.

Lesti was the last one to finish her incantation. “Fireball!” Instantly, a large ball of flame roared to life in front of her.
