Chapter Fourteen
Albain lowered his hand. âWhat?â he said blankly. âJeopardy? Betrayal? Are you sure?â
âYes, my lord.â Hecati gestured mournfully at the robe lying on the floor. âThe sacred bridal robe has been torn beyond repair. Iâm sure your lordship knows the terrible omen this constitutes for Lady Bixiaâs wedded happiness.â
âSuperstition,â Bixia said; then, under her fatherâs steady glare, she hitched her nightgown up properly over both shoulders.
âI hope that was a joke, daughter,â he said with severity.
Bixia swallowed and dropped her eyes. âYes, Father.â
âHeresy, even in jest, is a bad habit. I doubt youâll have the freedom at court to speak your mind as freely as you do here.â
Her head came up defiantly, but at the last moment she said nothing. Her gaze went to Elandra, and she shrugged.
Lord Albain scowled at the robe. âIsnât this the piece that cost me nearly nine hundred ducats?â
âYes, my lord,â Hecati said.
Elandra gasped, and even Bixia looked impressed.
Hecatiâs eyes narrowed to slits. She watched Elandra closely, like a cat eyeing its prey.
Albain looked a bit stunned, but he rallied. âBixiaâs got other robes. One of them will have to do.â
âBut, Father!â Bixia wailed. âThe others arenât blessed. I canât marry the emperor like a rag girl. I have to have a robe from Mahira. You know how important it is.â
âNo!â he said explosively. âMurdeth and Fury, girl. Youâll make a pauper of me.â
Tears welled up in Bixiaâs green eyes. âI canât go through with it. My bridal robe is ruined, and my marriage will be cursed forever.â
âEnough of that!â he said roughly, but helplessness had entered his gaze. âOh, hellâs breath. Donât start that drizzling. Weâll see what can be done.â
âOh, Father, thank you!â Bixia flung her arms around his neck, standing on tiptoe to kiss his scarred cheek. âYouâre so good to me. So kind and generous.â
He patted her shoulder and cleared his throat with gratification. âWeâll see. Now mind you, get dressed in a hurry.â
Beaming, Bixia vanished back into her bedchamber with a slam of the door. Her gong rang, summoning attendants. One of Elandraâs duties was to help her sister dress every morning. Right now, however, she scarcely dared breathe, and she did not move.
âWhat is to be done, my lord?â Hecati asked. âThe wedding cannot proceed as plannedââ
âIt must!â he shouted, then grimaced and raised his hand in placation. âNo delays,â he said in a more reasonable tone of voice. âDamn it all, I wonât insult the emperor all because of an accursed nightgown!â
âYour daughter must have the raiment that is her due.â
âHellâs teeth, woman! Iâve spent a fortune already on her damned trousseau.â
âThat is not the issue,â Hecati said coolly. âBrides of high lineage are traditionally sent to their marriage beds in Mahiran bridal robes. The blessing was to ensure a swift conception of an heir. If Lady Bixia fails in this duty, there will beââ
âEnough,â he said heavily and wiped perspiration from his brow. âNo need to spell out what I understand perfectly. All must go on as planned.
